Chelsea are confident of striking a deal for goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic months after Manchester United wanted him.
The Blues have been in a goalkeeping quandary this summer just like United.
United let David De Gea leave the club and have replaced him with Andre Onana whilst Dean Henderson could be on his way out.
It’s a similar story at Chelsea as they decided to ship Edouard Mendy off to Al Ahli before signing Robert Sanchez from Brighton and Hove Albion.
Chelsea have now allowed Kepa Arrizabalaga to join Real Madrid on loan, meaning they are back in the market for another stopper.
One thing is for certain – the Blues can’t afford to go until January with Lucas Bergstrom as second-choice.
Chelsea move in for Manchester United-linked Djordje Petrovic
The top target for Chelsea right now appears to be New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
The Serbian international joined the Revs last summer as he came in from Cukaricki to replace Matt Turner.
MORE UNITED STORIES
Petrovic excelled in Major League Soccer and the London Evening Standard report that the Blues are ‘closing in’ on signing him.
It’s stated that Chelsea are confident of completing the signing of Petrovic in a deal worth around £11.8million.
The 23-year-old seems set to come in and compete with Sanchez but it could have all been so different.
The Mirror reported back in March that United had been watching Petrovic in action and were considering a summer swoop.
United ended up signing Andre Onana but may still have Petrovic on the radar as Chelsea close in.
Could United go back in for Petrovic?
Chelsea appear to be nearing a deal could don’t completely rule out United making a late move here.
United are in talks to offload Dean Henderson to Crystal Palace and that means a new goalkeeper is wanted.
Petrovic may well be the kind of goalkeeper United want as competition for Onana given his age, allowing him to develop for potential resale down the line.
Petrovic also has plenty of games under his belt and could be able to deputise to a high level in cup games or if Onana is unavailable for whatever reason.
That’s just speculation on our part, as it seems that Petrovic will be heading to Stamford Bridge, but it’s a situation United may have one eye on.
