Breaking down Man Utd’s ambitious plan to raise £100m from selling four players

Manchester United are keen on selling four first-team players to generate £100 million in sales this summer, according to reports.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are already well underway behind the scenes attempting to return Manchester United to its former glory but one rather important aspect needs serious work, the playing squad.

This season for Erik ten Hag and United has been a rather disastrous one with the Red Devils cut adrift from the Champions League spots and there is serious doubt over the future of the Dutchman.

As for the players at Ten Hag’s disposal, there are massive question marks around the future of around half the first-team squad and this ‘open heart surgery’ that was suggested by Ralf Rangnick may well be a reality next summer.

United’s £100 million plan

According to a report from iNews, United are planning on selling four players this summer in the hopes that they can raise over £100 million to help kickstart the rebuild.

Chief among these players is Mason Greenwood, who is currently out on loan at La Liga side Getafe. Greenwood looked set to return to the United squad after the internal investigation but that has not been the case after fan backlash.

The 22-year-old has done relatively well for the Spanish side and there have been rumours of Barcelona’s interest.

Scott McTominay, who has been entrusted more and more by Ten Hag this campaign is set to be another with the Red Devils hoping that West Ham United re-enter the race for the Scotsman, who could fetch a big fee.

The other two players are Hannibal Mejbri and Alvaro Fernandez, who are both out on loan with there being options in these deals for them to become permanent.

The £100 million claim is very ambitious. Fernandez’s buy option is £8.5 million and Hannibal’s around £17 million.

That would leave £74 million for Greenwood and McTominay combined. Perhaps it’s possible – but probably unlikely.

Ineos’ first test

Over the past decade, the idea of a rebuild has been floated around by those at Old Trafford with very little ever actually achieved.

The club overpromises and undersells and this summer will represent Ratcliffe’s and Ineos’ first big test of their credentials to see if they can do what the Glazers could not.

Bringing in a big fee for these players would be huge for the summer budget and due to all four of these potential sales being homegrown talents, this would look very good on the Red Devils’ books.
