Manchester United are in dire need of some sort of centre-half refreshment, now a boost has been given over one of the top targets.

This summer will be the first opportunity for Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to make their mark at Old Trafford and revamp the tired defensive options currently on display.

Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane are all on the wrong side of 30 with injuries beginning to prove detrimental.

Meanwhile, Victor Lindelof isn’t good enough as a centre-half, leaving Lisandro Martinez as the only true option who could still be at Manchester United in a few years.

This of course won’t do as he needs support, this is why Ian Wright has urged Ratcliffe to bring in two talented young defenders.

Manchester United handed boost in bid to sign Jarrad Branthwaite

One name who simply can’t escape being linked with United is Jarrad Branthwaite and now United have been handed a boost in their bid to sign him.

According to the Mirror, Everton has begun planning for life after their impressive defender.

This comes in the form of keeping tabs on Hull City defender Jacob Greaves who has been integral in the Tigers’ push for promotion.

This could suggest that the Toffees are resigned to selling the Englishman who could cost in the region of £75m.

Should Sir Jim Ratcliffe be targeting Jarrad Branthwaite?

With Branthwaite, there is no denying his talent. He truly is one of the best options on the market but there is just one problem and that is the price, with the English tax placed onto his value.

This could be a massive negative when United are deciding on who they should sign at the centre-half position with a cheaper choice like Portuguese star Goncalo Inacio likely being more favourable.

Ultimately though, if Branthwaite is the one United want, there’s a good chance they’ll get him with Ineos set to take no prisoners this summer, so Everton eyeing a replacement is a huge boost.
