Bernardo Silva may have actually done Man Utd a favour in the transfer market

Bernardo Silva’s move to Real Madrid may benefit Manchester United, as it has led to the collapse of Joao Gomes’ transfer to Atletico Madrid.

It’s no secret that Manchester United are navigating the transfer market, seeking midfielders who can help take Michael Carrick’s team to the next level.

United have looked at players with Premier League experience, but three targets have moved elsewhere for fees in excess of £85m: Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali.

Now, United could turn their attention to Joao Gomes at Wolves, following the collapse of the Brazilian midfielder’s move to Atletico Madrid.

Although United have yet to complete any deals this summer, it is clear from those being targeted that Ineos are yet again prioritising players with Premier League experience.

Other examples include Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise if United considered a swoop for Gomes at Wolves, especially given he is far too good a player to be playing in the Championship.

The 25-year-old was set to sign for Atletico Madrid, but the La Liga outfit became frustrated with Gomes’ agent, Jorge Mendes, so they’ve completed a deal to sign Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP instead.

Globo reports on how Atletico had already agreed on a transfer fee (£38.33m), salary terms, and contract length with Gomes. However, they also had another agreement with his agent regarding Bernardo Silva, who ended up going to arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Atletico were so annoyed with Mendes’ change of plans regarding Silva that they decided to pull the plug on a deal with Gomes.

In turn, Silva may have done United a favour by joining Real Madrid, despite spending nine years at Man City.

United could look at Gomes and see value in signing the Brazilian midfielder for a fee worth below £40m, which is a lower price than what they have been quoted for other targets, which is partly due to Wolves losing their Premier League status last term.

The Reds have already made progress on deals to sign two other Brazilian midfielders. Andrey Santos and Ederson are both set for medicals before completing their moves to Old Trafford.

When did Man Utd last sign players represented by Jorge Mendes?

Mendes has a long history of bringing players to United.

Of course, the best example is Cristiano Ronaldo, even though he left Old Trafford under a grey cloud in 2022.

In 2024, United signed two players represented by Mendes. They include Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain and Leny Yoro from Lille.

Ugarte, who has been ruled out with a long-term injury, has been an underwhelming signing at United.

Meanwhile, Yoro is still developing his game, but the jury is still out.
