SL Benfica are keen on wrapping up a deal for Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez, according to reports.
Alvaro Fernandez has spent the first half of this season out on loan at La Liga side Granada and has looked promising for the Spanish side.
Manchester United decided to cancel Sergio Reguilon’s loan move from Tottenham Hotspur after failing to impress at Old Trafford and the former Sevilla left-back returned to London which has opened up a spot at left-back.
Letting go of Reguilon meant there was a spot at left-back for a third-choice option and with there being no sign of Tyrell Malacia returning to the first team and Luke Shaw set to be out for the next few weeks, fans were hoping to see Fernandez recalled.

Benfica move
However, United may recall Fernandez but not for the reason they may be thinking as the Spanish left-back has been heavily linked with a move to Portuguese giants SL Benfica.
Signing a new left-back is the priority for the Portuguese side and today’s edition of Record claims that Benfica will attempt to wrap up the signing of the 20-year-old, even claiming they wish to do so in the next few hours.
There isn’t much more detail given in the article but it looks like the Red Devils could be set to lose yet another academy player, for a relatively cheap fee, too.
United must do one thing
If there is anything that United has learned over these last few years of allowing young players to flourish elsewhere, is that a buyback clause must be included.
A buyback almost acts as a loan deal but the Red Devils will be able to trigger whenever they want and then sell the Spaniard for even more money or start him in the first-team if his performances warrant this.
O Jogo had previously claimed that the Portuguese giants could sign Fernandez for just £5 million which would be an incredible bargain and one that the Red Devils could regret.
Not including a buyback clause or even a percentage of a future fee seems like an amateur move from the Red Devils but we shall wait and see if this is indeed the case.
