Bayern Munich could hijack Manchester United attempts to sign Yann Sommer

Bayern Munich could now move for reported Manchester United target Yann Sommer during the January transfer window.

ESPN recently reported that United are already working on a deal to sign Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Sommer as a free agent next summer.

The Red Devils are free to enter pre-contract discussions with Sommer and his representatives about a potential move to Old Trafford from 1 January.

Martin Dubravka is just a temporary loan solution as a backup goalkeeper, while Dean Henderson’s situation will need resolving in the summer too.

Bayern could spoil United’s Sommer plans

But German outlet Bild report that Bayern could swoop for Sommer in January as they look to deal with the season-ending injury suffered by Manuel Neuer.

They report that Gladbach do not want to lose their number one goalkeeper in the middle of the season, leaving themselves short between the sticks.

But if Bayern were to offer something like 5 million euros (£4.4 million), they would consider it rather than letting him go for nothing in the summer.

That could ruin United’s plans to sign the goalkeeper who played for Switzerland on their route to the last 16 of the World Cup.

The report does say that Sommer dreams of moving to England, and that may give United the edge in terms of the preference of the player himself.

It remains to be seen what United do between the posts longer term, with David de Gea’s contract situation still up in the air.

It is not clear whether Sommer would be expecting to come in as a number one or a number two if United did sign him.

And at Bayern, he would have to consider he would likely go back to being second choice next season once Neuer is back fit anyway.
