Bad move: Manchester United linked with downgrade on Harry Maguire

Manchester United have plans to upgrade at centre-back on Harry Maguire this summer.

Kim Min-Jae is reported to be first choice. Axel Disasi is viewed as a back-up.

Possibly around 50th or 51st choice, potentially, is Leeds United defender Robin Koch, who bemusingly is being linked with a move.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claims: “News #Koch: He‘s on the shortlist of ManUtd! Loose talks took place. Confirmed”.

Plettenberg last week linked Manchester United with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.

And last summer he claimed of United’s move for Frenkie de Jong: “Been told that de Jong could be presented at the weekend. But it’s not 100 % safe right now. There are plans to present him in the stadium.”

So if you don’t want Robin Koch at Manchester United, take that as some reassurance that as some reassurance this move won’t happen.

Koch was part of a Leeds defence which conceded a league high 78 goals, starting 36 games.

Indeed per WhoScored, his average match rating of 6.52 was worse than Harry Maguire’s 6.59. Shouldn’t Manchester United be looking to upgrade here?

Crossing the divide from Leeds to Manchester United is always fraught with controversy. We aren’t sure he’s worth the fuss. Koch is keen to leave Leeds behind and escape the Championship, understandably.

He has represented Germany at international level, and signed for Leeds from Freiburg in 2020.

Manchester United can do better, and we expect them to. Note this, as these rumours will now be doing the rounds, just don’t take them seriously.

We would be better off sticking with Harry Maguire.
