Manchester United are pushing hard to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, as a replacement for David de Gea.

Negotiations are ongoing between Manchester United and Inter Milan for Cameroon international Andre Onana, with a move expected to go through this week.

The Mail report the move is at the final stages, with United keen to get it over the line before the weekend.

Former Inter Milan back-up goalkeeper Tommaso Berni is a big fan, with the 40-year-old telling TMW: “If he’s sold I hope he’ll be let go for a significant amount because the boy has value.”

Andre Onana ‘extraordinary’

Berni was at Inter between 2014 and 2020, and began his career in their academy before signing for Wimbledon in 2001.

The former Lazio and Sampdoria stopper spoke highly of Onana and says he will be very disappointed if he leaves Inter.

He said: “If it were to become official I would be very sorry. He did some extraordinary things, settling into a completely different football, new and with a different language.

“He is a goalkeeper of great quality, of great depth, of great charisma that I would like to see at Inter for many years.”

Berni’s more emotive comments are in contrast to other practical views of Onana’s departure, which focus on the business aspect of the deal.

Sky Italia journalist Riccardo Gentile was quoted via FCInter1908: “The Onana operation is a good signal, the ability to go and get him for free and resell it at that figure, is a crazy market operation.”

David de Gea to Inter played down

The other side of Onana’s impending Manchester United move has left veteran stopper David de Gea without a club after his contract expired.

Berni was quizzed about whether Inter might make a play to try and sign the Spaniard, and had mixed views.

He said: “We’re talking about a great goalkeeper, the name speaks for itself and there’s no need to comment on it.

“He would be a great replacement for Onana, perhaps due to his age and salary, different assessments are being made. Inter need a goalkeeper for the future, who can help grow and become an important pillar.”
