Atalanta’s £51 million centre-half Giorgio Scalvini has confirmed he has signed a new contract until 2028 in a blow to Premier League giants Manchester United.

Speculation suggesting the Italy international could sign fresh terms with La Dea has been on the rise in recent weeks.

And Giorgio Scalvini, with only three months until the summer window kicks off, has now taken the opportunity to shut down any lingering uncertainty over his immediate future.

According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking to The United Stand, there is interest from Manchester United in another Atalanta starlet, having previously raided the Bergamo outfit for Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojund.

The £51 million-rated Scalvini appears to have ruled out the prospect of joining Hojlund at Old Trafford, however, during an interview with Tuttosport.

Giorgio Scalvini unlikely to join Manchester United

“(I feel) satisfaction, amazement, and great emotion. I just feel like saying thanks to all the coaches of the youth team and to Mister (Gian Piero) Gasperini, (the coach) who made me grow so much and who gave me the opportunity to make my debut in adult football,” 20-year-old Scalvini explains.

“It is it is essential to see this as a starting point, to try to do better and better.”

While confirming that he has extended his Atalanta contract until 2028, Scalvini added; “It gives me great happiness. I am grateful to the club. I’m very close to the Atalanta family. I was a child, now I’m becoming a man always wearing this shirt.

“I’m very happy to be here. My only thought is Atalanta and I only want to improve every day.”

United are prioritising defenders

With Scalvini seemingly out of the picture, then, Manchester United’s extensive list of centre-back targets may have just got that little bit shorter.

Following the completion of Ineos’ long-awaited minority takeover, the Red Devils have been tipped to look a little closer to home with proven Premier League operators like Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi under consideration.
