£50m: Relegated side set ludicrous price tag for player who ‘ticks all the boxes’ for Manchester United

Southampton have set an absolutely insane price tag of £50m for James Ward Prowse.

The English midfielder is undeniably one of the Saints’ best players. Despite his quality, he still couldn’t save them from relegation. Southampton were demoted to the Championship for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

This likely means that the England international will be looking for a way out of St Mary’s, and with United in the market for a midfielder – there have already been brief links between the two.

He would be a great addition at Old Trafford – however, price is certainly a factor.

Southampton set price tag for James Ward Prowse

According to The Telegraph the club want a staggering £50 million for the 28-year-old this summer.

This fee could have been justified providing the club stayed in England’s top flight, but the fact they want upwards of £50m whilst sitting in the Championship is borderline insane.

The England international has spent his entire career at St Mary’s and has proven he’s one of the best midfielders in the business, particularly from a dead ball where he’s up there with the elites in world football.

Naturally, Manchester United have flirted as a potential suitor for James Ward Prowse to move to.

The Manchester Evening News reported that Ward Prowse ‘ticks all the boxes’ for Manchester United as a signing, but one box it evidently doesn’t tick anymore is the price tag.

With a reported £100m to spend this summer, half the budget on a relegated player will certainly not be in Erik ten Hag’s plans.

The Red Devils have also been linked to Mason Mount, Frenkie de Jong and Moises Caicedo, so it’s still unbeknown to anyone who could be featuring as United’s midfield general next season.
