Donny van de Beek’s move away from Manchester United looks to have hit a stumbling block, according to reports.

Eintracht Frankfurt were in talks with Manchester United for Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek and those talks looked to have progressed, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sanctioned the signing of the Dutch midfielder from Erik ten Hag’s Ajax but the 26-year-old has done nothing of note in a United shirt.

Despite scoring on his debut for the Red Devils. Van de Beek, for whatever reason, failed to get his big chance at Old Trafford, first under the Norwegian but then his former boss, Ten Hag.

Van de Beek talks stalling

A report from German outlet BILD has detailed how those talks are progressing but mentions one potential stumbling block, that could well be an issue for most looking to leave Old Trafford, their wages.

Earning £6 million a year at Old Trafford, according to the report, would make him ‘by far the top earner’ in the German side, and it’s seen as ‘impossible’ for Frankfurt to break their wage structure for the Manchester United player.

As is usually the case with these deals, the only way that this deadlock can be broken is for the Red Devils to pay a part of the Dutchman’s wages, which would just be another silly move for the Red Devils to do.

The other way would be for the Dutchman to give up the money he would be owed, which, again, seems very unlikely in this scenario.

Van de Beek may well sum up United’s poor recruitment strategy more than any other signing made in the past decade.

Van de Beek’s tough time

The deal to take the Dutch midfielder to Old Trafford was completed in just 48 hours and was seen as a shining example of the club’s new recruitment structure under Solskjaer working well.

Three years later, however, the deal to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford sums up everything that is wrong with the United recruitment strategy.

It was common knowledge that Van de Beek is an attacking midfielder, with Bruno Fernandes a key man under Solskjaer, where on earth would he have fit in?

A loan move to Everton failed to bring the best out of the Dutchman and it now seems likely that United may have to pay the midfielder off to leave.
