Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney had an incredible career, winning everything at club level, but he does have one major regret.

In terms of Manchester United legends, few would be placed above Wayne Rooney, who is the club’s record goalscorer, with an insurmountable 253 goals.

Rooney eclipsed the great Sir Bobby Charlton in his final season at the club, scoring against Stoke with a brilliant free-kick under the management of Jose Mourinho.

For this, Rooney is a clear United legend, and that is an opinion held unanimously among fans of the Red Devils and also other Premier League clubs. Despite this, Rooney is criminally underrated, maybe since he never had success with England.

Rooney went to three World Cups with England, with all three being tournaments to forget. However, he has one main regret.

What was Wayne Rooney’s major career regret?

Rooney was far from an uncontroversial figure throughout his career, clashing with teammates, rivals, and Sir Alex Ferguson at various points.

One of his most famous moments came in the 2006 World Cup, when Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo had a falling out due to the Portuguese winger’s reaction to his United teammate’s red card for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho.

Well, speaking with the Stick to Football podcast earlier this year, Rooney picked out the decision to even go to the tournament as his biggest regret.

“I wouldn’t have went to the World Cup. I had broken my foot before the end of the season and then rushed back.

“I always remembered walking in, and Jermain Defoe was walking out because he was on standby, and I felt so bad for him.

“I was never fit for the tournament, and then in the end I got sent off in the quarter finals. I should never have gone there.

“When it’s your first World Cup, you’d do anything”, Rooney concluded

Rooney and Ronaldo left this altercation in the summer, not taking it to Carrington; however, for England, there will be regret that the legend was brought.

It was a ludicrous moment which will forever be remembered in World Cup history, from Rooney’s ‘stomp’ to Ronaldo’s wink afterwards, but nearly 20 years later and things have cooled down.

Rooney actually discussed it again lately on his YouTube channel, explaining that Carvalho was smart.

“Carvalho, I think he’s such a good player, complements John Terry really well. He was experienced, a leader, obviously clever as well, in the way he got me sent off at the World Cup.

“Obviously, I did catch him, but still to this day I’ve no idea if I meant to do it or not. It never came into my head saying ‘I’m gonna stamp on him’, but maybe it’s something I try to blank out.”
