Thomas Muller on what stood out to him at Man Utd after the Red Devils showed interest in the former Bayern Munich ace

Speaking to the YouTube channel AwayDays, Thomas Muller was asked how close he came to signing for Manchester United while he was still at Bayern Munich.

The 2014 World Cup winner, who now plays for Vancouver Whitecaps, admitted that a standout factor for him was that Louis van Gaal was in the Old Trafford dugout.

Muller had become a key Bayern player under Louis van Gaal when the former Netherlands and United manager was in charge at the Allianz Arena.

Who is Manchester United’s best manager since Sir Alex Ferguson?

The Vancouver Whitecaps player hailed the “influential” impact that Van Gaal had on him and said that Man Utd even tabled an “interesting offer” for him.

“No, [there] was a moment because Louis van Gaal, my most influential coach, was at United and I thought about it, to be honest,” Muller said.

“It was an interesting offer [at] the right moment, but I was in three years [into a] contract and Bayern denied from the beginning and that was also a good feeling for me that Bayern said, ‘No, we want to keep you anyway.’”

Louis van Gaal revealed that Muller was on his 10-man wishlist for Man Utd signings that he wanted to make during his two seasons in charge at the Red Devils.

Muller ended speculation around his future at Bayern in 2015 and United’s interest in him after he inked a long-term six-year deal with the Bavarians.

“No chance to leave and then I extended my contract and I was happy at Bayern,” he added.

“So, there was no decision about, ‘Okay, I don’t feel well [and] I don’t feel good at Bayern,’ but it was a nice offer and with Louis van Gaal as a coach [at Man Utd] was interesting for me.”

Van Gaal succeeded David Moyes as United manager in 2014 and was sacked in 2016 after the Red Devils lifted the FA Cup trophy under the Dutchman.
