Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to become the majority owners of Manchester United has a buyout clause to get rid of the Glazers.

There was uproar last week as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to takeover United became clear. It confirmed the worst fears of fans with the offer seeing the Glazer family remain as minority shareholders.

Sky News has now reported that the bid includes “put-and-call arrangements” which would become active in 2026. This would eventually pave the way for the Glazer family to exit United completely.

The proposed put-and-call option, if exercised would either force the Glazers to sell their remaining shares, or force Ratcliffe to buy them out at a later date.

The report adds that the first window for this to occur would be three years after the initial deal.

This news will be something of a consolation to fans who are desperate to get rid of the Glazers and would revolt if they remained in place.

The takeover so far

Last Friday was the third deadline bringing to an end the third bidding round. Both Ratcliffe and his rival Sheikh Jassim have submitted bids, with the Brit rumoured to be the favourite.

The main difference between the two bids is the level of control each party wants. With Ratcliffe bidding to be the majority shareholder, and the Sheikh and his foundation bidding to become full owner.

It is also reported that a preferred bidder is expected to be made later this month.

Among the two main offers, the Glazers also have offers for minority stakes including an offer from American investors Carlyle.

The Glazers revealed their plan to sell in November sparking what is now a six month race to buy the worlds biggest club.

As the story runs on, many fans are desperate for the takeover to be resolved without further delay.
