Why returning £60m midfielder will not help Man Utd’s cause unless crucial change is made

Manchester United are set to see Casemiro return to the first team soon, as the Brazilian is back out on the training pitch.

Casemiro has been injured for the past few weeks for Manchester United with Erik ten Hag having to rely on Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo since the Brazilian suffered his injury.

However, Mainoo in particular, equipped himself very well in the United first team and you do worry about his future this season with Casemiro surely set to go straight back into the starting 11.

Despite the imminent return of the midfielder, who was seen back at Carrington on Sunday, things will not get better unless Ten Hag makes one vital change.

Casemiro’s fruitless return

When the Brazilian midfielder does return, no doubt some of the fanbase will believe that Casemiro could be the man to instantly solve United’s problems in the engine room.

If the former Real Madrid midfielder replaces Amrabat, who has blown hot and cold with his form in a Red Devils shirt, he will not be the be-all and end-all for United. We saw this earlier in the season, when his own form came under scrutiny.

If the Red Devils continue to play with two advanced midfielders as they have been doing in recent times with Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay pushing high, they will continue to struggle, whoever is in there with them.

Perhaps playing Mainoo alongside the Brazilian midfielder would solve the structural issues that remain in the engine room.

Last season, Fred and Casemiro, two Brazilians, played alongside each other in the big games and this worked to devastating effect with the pair dovetailing well.

Mainoo could do this role and offer more for the Red Devils in possession.

Ten Hag’s decision

One thing is crucial for Ten Hag, however, the Red Devils have to keep playing and giving chances to Mainoo, who has shown his quality at just 18.

Dropping Mainoo for the next few weeks would be a questionable decision and one that may make the fanbase even less patient with the Dutchman.

Sticking with the academy graduate, however, could be a smart move for the former Ajax boss as he bids to carry on at Old Trafford despite the club’s poor form.

Mainoo and Casemiro could save Ten Hag’s job and that’s no exaggeration.
