Michael Carrick’s actions over the past week relating to the academy have set a new non-negotiable requirement for Manchester United’s next head coach.
This appointment might very well still end up being Michael Carrick, but in the event it isn’t, Ineos must demand his successor repeat his commitment to the academy.
On Wednesday night, as Manchester United beat Oxford 4-1 in the FA Youth Cup, there was disbelief that Carrick and first-team staff had made the massive 300-mile round trip to the Kassam Stadium.
This is a long way from Ruben Amorim’s ignorance toward the academy, calling out players in the academy unprompted and attending zero games outside of Carrington.
Now, this dedication to the academy needs to be a requirement for whoever becomes permanent.
Who was Man United’s standout performer in the FA Youth Cup win vs Oxford United?
What did you think of the performnace and who was your man of the match?
Michael Carrick’s dedication to the Manchester United academy is important
Carrick didn’t have to do much in order to better Amorim’s treatment of the academy and first-team link, but he has gone above and beyond.
Since taking charge just over a month ago, Carrick has been to Old Trafford, Leigh, City Academy, and now Oxford, proving to every academy player that he is watching their development.

Such importance being placed on the academy is a throwback to the Sir Alex Ferguson era at United, with the club’s motto of ‘Youth, Courage, Success’ being adhered to.
Carrick’s actions have already restored belief from the academy in the first-team pathway, which many thought had eroded under Amorim.
Wayne Rooney suggested academy parents weren’t happy with Amorim, which was a damning indication of why the Portuguese coach was never going to succeed at Old Trafford.
Carrick’s actions have changed this, with JJ Gabriel’s father crediting the United boss on his X account.
“I must say Michael Carrick and the first-team staff travelling all the way to watch the youth team is a CLASS act… that’s what Man United is all about.”
This adds to United’s growing chance of keeping Gabriel, as he and his family seem pleased with the current trajectory and pathway.
Prove me wrong: Michael Carrick has already shown enough to become permanent Man United manager.
13 points from 15 would be title winning form over a full season…
Carrick has set a new non-negotiable for the next permanent manager
Carrick’s actions alone could see United save hundreds of millions in the transfer market if it leads to belief and trust in the academy to take up first-team roles.
Discussing his love for supporting the academy with the BBC, Carrick has revealed his love for United’s academy.
“An awful lot. Listen, I’ve always kept that feeling of what it was like as a young player. It’s something I’ve always had an eye on and been passionate about. With the tradition of this football club, it’s natural to take that on.
“It’s just as proud a moment as any to give a young player their debut, and there’s certainly a want from not just me but all the staff and everyone at the club – to try and produce the young players and give them opportunities as much as we can.”
To be the manager of United, whoever is appointed needs to follow Carrick’s example and treat the academy like an extension of the first team.
Carrick is the likely leading candidate right now, for this, and also for the five unbeaten games with impressive performances to push United into the Champions League race.
So when Ineos considers their options to become the next head coach, travelling to watch academy games needs to be part of the contract.
Being United manager is more than just winning, with this a key factor that must be considered.
