Why Jaydan Kamason could be Michael Carrick’s surprise breakout during pre-season

Michael Carrick’s pre-season plans are sure to involve some Manchester United academy players, with Jaydan Kamason very likely to be featured.

Manchester United’s squad, which returned for training over the past few days, has seen several talented academy stars make the jump into Michael Carrick’s squad, with several first-team players still missing due to the World Cup.

Carrick has been getting United ready for a potential title challenge during the 2026/27 campaign. But with such a fractured squad, Carrick has had to turn to the academy.

United have a number of academy midfielders set to be involved this weekend against Wrexham in Finland.

But at right back, Jaydan Kamason is Carrick’s only solution right now.

IF Andrey Santos is available to play Wrexham, who would you like to see him start alongside out of the available options?

Jaydan Kamason spotted during pre-season training for Manchester United

The opportunity for Jaydan Kamason to play during pre-season has long been expected, with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui both out of contention for the time being due to reaching the last 16 and quarter-finals of the World Cup, respectively.

Therefore, United are without a senior right-back, so up steps Kamason.

Kamason was the only right-back pictured in United’s training sessions earlier this week and is probably the only real option for Carrick to start with in the position.

Kamason has been knocking on the first-team door for arguably 18 months, standing out for his attacking quality at right back.

Kamason can score, assist, and has the pace and power to be a real threat in senior football with the right development under Carrick.

The right-back has struggled with injury, but he is fit now, and his qualities all line up with what Carrick demands from a right-back. Having been selected over Yuel Helafu to step up, Kamason’s chance is certain to arrive, and he could get more than one game.

Last season, Kamason consistently performed to a high level, meaning Carrick will surely have been impressed with him and should be planning to integrate him this summer.

Jaydan Kamason style of play

As a right-back, Kamason is a modern, forward-thinking player who has shown through the academy that he can be a threat down the right flank.

He has a strong cross and is capable of beating a man to find space for said cross. He is also excellent when it comes to finishing, as he can surprisingly finish off chances really well.

Kamason is highly athletic and loves to get up and down the right side with relentless energy and speed, which could really catch the eye early on for Carrick.

Defensively, Kamason is also a net positive, as he has an intensity in the press, determination to get back, and the grit to put in tackles and win duels for the side. A true modern, all-round full-back.

Kamason could earn vital loan with an impressive pre-season

As good as Kamason is and how impressive he might end up being for United during this summer, chances are that the best he can hope for is a loan move in August.

This is because Dalot and Mazraoui appear to be going nowhere, although Ruben Amorim is keen on Mazraoui, so it makes it incredibly tough for Kamason to get minutes.

But if he shines during pre-season, then Kamason might end up getting a loan at a decent level, which in the long term will aid his evolution toward becoming a first-teamer for United.

It is a big summer for Kamason. At 19, he needs to begin taking steps into the senior game, and this is his golden opportunity to prove what he can do for United against Championship-level competition at least.
