What Man Utd star who created five chances did in the 88th minute summed up his fantastic performance

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes played like a captain against Chelsea, showing why he has the armband.

The media seem to have decided Bruno Fernandes is not the right captain for Manchester United, with rent-a-quote pundits queuing up to have a pop at him whenever the team lose, for simply not being Roy Keane reincarnated.

Well, what you do get from Fernandes is tireless effort, mixed in with a touch of quality. So what if he has a moan at referees?

The good sides of Fernandes’ game were on full display against Chelsea last night in the 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes plays with tireless edge

Bruno Fernandes missed an early penalty for Manchester United. It was a rarity, and if anything, it spurred him on to give everything for the team and make up for it.

There was a moment in the first half when Chelsea broke on the counter attack, and a player popped up inside the box to cut it out. You would expect it to have been a centre-back. Instead it was Fernandes who had run all the way back to intervene.

This continued all game, and was summed up by an incident in the 88th minute when Fernandes ran back from the edge of the Chelsea penalty box, to win a sliding tackle inside the Chelsea half, and take possession back for Manchester United.

It typified his performance, he just never stopped. Manchester United were efficient with the pressing, with Erik ten Hag syncing the front four to work seamlessly.

Bruno Fernandes most creative player

Bruno Fernandes was, as usual, the most creative player on the pitch. He made five key passes, among the 88 per cent he completed.

Fernandes had 74 touches in total, with the only knock on his performance being the five shots he attempted with no goals.

But these are the games where you have to dig in. It’s easy to play on adrenaline when you are scoring and feeling good. This wasn’t one of those nights. Fernandes had to gut it out.

He blocked two Chelsea shots, made four ball recoveries, made two clearances and one interception, and also won one free-kick.

Manchester United’s whole team had the right attitude last night. And that’s a lot easier for the manager to pull off when the captain is leading by example. More of the same please.
