Three things Erik ten Hag got wrong during Man United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth

Erik ten Hag has come in for a lot of criticism this season and it looks like next week will be no different for the Dutchman.

Manchester United suffered a rather disgraceful defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford and were second best in the encounter, despite the host’s attempts to rescue the game.

Erik ten Hag has overseen a disastrous season so far with the Red Devils losing 11 games in all competitions already this season, things are looking bleak.

It’s fair to say the Dutchman got things wrong against a very well-drilled Bournemouth side. Here are three things the Dutchman got wrong.

Forward line

Anthony Martial had a rather torrid game and was cheered when his number went up on the substitute’s board and it’s hard to disagree with the fanbase.

The Frenchman has struggled, bar the Everton game, to make an impact in the team and you wonder what the future holds for Martial, who has been at the club for eight years now.

Alejandro Garnacho, once again, looked bright against the Cherries which will surely mean Marcus Rashford will remain on the bench for the time being, but Ten Hag got his striker decision all wrong.

Midfield mistakes

The second mistake that the Dutchman made was sticking with the same midfield that worked so well against a Chelsea side who were all over the place.

Sofyan Amrabat was isolated as Scott McTominay attempted to push forward and get involved in the attack but he struggled which meant the Red Devils were very open.

Bournemouth are a well-drilled side and the Cherries picked off the Red Devils at will as United’s struggles were laid bare for all to see.

Two defensive midfielders should have started to try and negate this problem but the Dutchman refused that change.

Luke Shaw

It would be hard to disagree with someone if they said that Luke Shaw was one of the league’s best left-backs last season but he has lined up as a centre-back on occasions.

This was one of the occasions, however, where the Englishman should not have started the game as a central defender and the Red Devils lost the creative output that he provides.

The experiment of playing the Englishman as a centre-back should end for now. Raphael Varane, a Champions League and World Cup winner, has to come back in for the clash against Bayern Munich.
