Three reasons agent criticism of Benjamin Sesko is completely wrong, including three worse signings

Manchester United summer signing Benjamin Sesko is unfairly under fire.

The pressure at Manchester United has broken players before. It is why we often see them thriving after leaving Old Trafford, and the media act puzzled why.

For the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Antony there is simply no comparison playing for Napoli and Real Betis, up against the huge scrutiny that Manchester United brings.

New signing Benjamin Sesko is already experiencing it. Take a look at the recent ‘agents survey’ from The Athletic.

A small sample size of 20 anonymous agents polled saw six vote Sesko to Manchester United as the worst deal of the transfer window, the most of any player.

Let’s take a look at three reasons why the criticism is plain wrong…

Benjamin Sesko is already scoring goals

Benjamin Sesko was signed for Manchester United to score goals. He is already doing what he was signed to do.

You can throw out the early games where he played mainly from the bench as he tried to catch up on his fitness after missing pre-season. Or the game against Chelsea when he was substituted early after Casemiro was sent off.

Sesko has scored two goals from inside the box in his last two games, giving Manchester United what they want from a striker.

He has already halved Rasmus Hojlund’s Premier League goal tally of just four goals from last season.

There were far worse deals in the summer transfer window

Let’s cut to the chase. Benjamin Sesko is not the worst signing of the summer transfer window, quite simply because there are other worse signings, and we will name three.

1) Manchester City paid £27 million for James Trafford, and after his woeful performances in the opening games they panicked to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma on wages of £250,000 per week.

2) Newcastle spent £55 million to sign 29-year-old Yoane Wissa, who then suffered a knee injury before playing a single game.

3) Liverpool shelled out a Premier League record fee of £116 million for Florian Wirtz, and he has not provided a single goal or assist. He has got off lightly compared to if he was a United player.

All three players have failed to do what they were signed to do, so far. Benjamin Sesko is fulfilling his obligation by scoring goals.

These players might go on to outperform Sesko – but to claim they are worse signings than the Manchester United star now is just plain wrong.

Manchester United paid cheaper fee than Newcastle offered

Even if you want to boil the argument down to price and claim Manchester United overpaid for Benjamin Sesko, the argument does not stack up.

The £66 million fee is a long-term investment, unlike Newcastle’s short-term panic move for Wissa.

United actually paid a cheaper fee than the amount Newcastle were willing to pay for Sesko before he rejected them.

Sesko’s move will prove shrewd business if he can become Manchester United’s reliable first-choice forward over the next five years.
