Thomas Tuchel’s assessment of Adam Wharton’s latest England display should be a real eye-opener for Manchester United over their interest in the Crystal Palace star.
Adam Wharton started in England’s final World Cup qualifying match on Sunday and the Crystal Palace midfielder played 65 minutes for Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson would replace Wharton in the second half, with England comfortably beating Albania 2-0 in their last Group K clash.
Harry Kane opened the scoring for the Three Lions in the 74th minute before the 32-year-old Bayern Munich striker netted his second of the contest eight minutes later.
Which Man Utd player has most chance of playing for England at the World Cup?
Manchester United target Wharton played centrally for Tuchel in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier at the Arena Kombetare in Tirana and produced a mixed display overall.

What Thomas Tuchel spotted about Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton amid Man Utd’s transfer interest in the England ace
Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice were either side of Manchester United-linked Adam Wharton in the three-man midfield for the start of England’s encounter with Albania.
However, Wharton, Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham and Arsenal ace Declan Rice would all make way from the pitch in the second half of the 2-0 victory.
Speaking after England’s win, Thomas Tuchel said that Wharton was left isolated on his own at times in the second half and was a “little exposed” in the match.
However, the ex-Chelsea manager admitted that the 21-year-old Crystal Palace ace was not at “fault” for being on his own and was critical of England’s overall display.
When asked about Wharton, Tuchel said on ITV Sport: “Good, good. Not easy, because we tried a little bit different in the build-up with John Stones [moving into the England midfield].
“In the second half, we reversed a little bit and played a 4-3-3, so he [Wharton] was alone, sometimes a little exposed.
“It’s not his fault. We were a bit open and a bit sloppy. But overall, he did well.”
Thomas Tuchel’s remarks about Adam Wharton’s England display should send a warning to Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim has already had to deal with an inconsistent United midfield combination after the Red Devils did not bring in a new midfielder in the summer.
Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes have predominantly occupied the two-man midfield pivot in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for United in the 2025-26 season.
However, United manager Amorim has seen the Red Devils’ fragile midfield tested in the current campaign and United are expected to sign a new midfielder in 2026.
Wharton has emerged on United’s radar and the Red Devils could pursue him next summer, but Crystal Palace are expected to play hardball over any approach made.
His England performance against Albania should warn United that the Eagles star is not enough to fix the major issues around the midfield area for Amorim.
If United do intend to sign Wharton in 2026, then the Red Devils’ pivot will need further reinforcement with other players stepping into the midfield to support it.
