Manchester United did not win again in the Champions League.
The Red Devils fought valiantly in Istanbul, with two early goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes putting the Red Devils right in the ascendency.
A Hakim Ziyech freekick shook the nerves before half-time, that was until Scott McTominay put United two goals to the good after the break.
But in classic Manchester United fashion – they crumbled. Two goals from Galatasaray squared the game, and that’s what it finished up in Istanbul.
Andre Onana had a night to forget
One Red Devil who will certainly want to put this fixture behind him is Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper has actually been in good form leading up to this fixture. His performances in the Premier League have led to him slowly winning the fans over after a shakey start. But this game will do him no favours.
He was arguably at fault for all three goals. The second was particularly bad, completely misjudging a second Ziyech free-kick and letting the Turks back into the game.
This is becoming a regular theme in the Champions League. There has rarely been a game where Onana hasn’t made a mistake on Europe’s biggest stage – which really reflects in the unfavourable position United find themselves in in their group.
They’re in real danger of crashing out of the competition. This opens up what is really quite an uncomfortable conversation.
Manchester United would have probably progressed with David de Gea in goal
Something that has probably come to Ten Hag’s mind is that the Red Devils would have already secured Champions League qualification had they had former goalkeeper David de Gea between the sticks.
The legendary Spanish veteran wasn’t deemed good enough by the manager last season and was subsequently sold – with Onana coming in to take his place.
De Gea had a wealth of Champions League experience, with 54 caps for Man Utd, and provided some outstanding performances.
You can’t help but think that with him between the sticks, United would have not made this many mistakes. You can argue the Spaniard always had a mistake in him – which he did, but seemingly never this frequent.
United have scored a whopping nine goals away from home in the competition this season, yet have come away with one measly point from their travels. A lot of that is down to goalkeeper incompetence.
We still think Andre Onana has a bright future at the club – but he seriously needs to iron out these silly errors, which are ultimately costing the side.
