Manchester United’s impending new owners Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are looking to make a splash, and bold new plans could do that.
Old Trafford is one of England’s most notable sporting arena however in recent years – despite its iconic nature – it’s fallen behind the curve in terms of infrastructure.
The Glazer family have overseen the stadium deteriorate, as the roof leaks become more common which has led to calls for significant stadium investment.
Something the Glazer family wouldn’t be likely to do at any point, however Sir Jim Ratcliffe on the other hand could be more than willing to see his beloved Manchester United back at the pinnacle of European football – with infrastructure playing a big part.
So the real question now is will it be a rebuild or redevelopment at Old Trafford? Both are being considered…

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has bold plans for Old Trafford
According to a report from The Telegraph, Sir Jim has a bold plan for Old Trafford with will involve one of two things.
Either the current Old Trafford will be expanded which could cost at least £800m to do, while on the other hand, a brand new state-of-the-art stadium could be built for between £1.5bn and £2bn.
The report highlights that Old Trafford could become the ‘Wembley of the North’ as Sir Jim feels the fanbase would accept a new stadium if the location remains the same.
If building a new ground, the Ineos chief could seek Government financial assistance to build what would be a real statement-maker.
Sir Jim should build Manchester United a brand-new stadium
Old Trafford is an iconic football venue and for anyone that’s been there, it’ll always hold fond memories. However, building a new stadium is the best choice for the club regardless of sentiment.
United should be among Europe’s elite and with those also considered in that bracket boasting impressive stadiums (such as the new Bernabeu), Old Trafford no longer stacks up.
Building a new stadium could work if similar elements of the current stadium are retained. Combining elements of the current stadium with more modern and state-of-the-art aspects could make for an iconic new Old Trafford which retains the legendary feeling of the Theatre of Dreams.
It’ll be a difficult thing to achieve, however, that is where world-class architects can come in and help Sir Jim make a real statement at United.
