Sir Alex Ferguson thinks Man Utd could be stuck in major ‘cycle,’ but Ineos could now prove him wrong

The stage might be now set for Ineos to show Sir Alex Ferguson that they know exactly how to ‘break’ one of the Manchester United legend’s biggest concerns.

Sir Alex Ferguson has witnessed first-hand the major struggles of Manchester United since the end of his legendary managerial reign in the Old Trafford dugout.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has also not been oblivious to the plight of the Red Devils, even before he decided to make his £1.25bn investment to become co-owner of the club.

During the early period of his United co-ownership, the Ineos chief vowed in 2024 to knock both Manchester City and Liverpool “off their perch” in English football.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s comparison of Man Utd to Liverpool showed the ultimate way for Ineos to break the cycle

Sir Alex Ferguson’s comparison of Man Utd to Liverpool showed the ultimate way for Ineos to break the cycle

Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominance over English football during the 1990s and the period up to the end of his reign in 2013 coincided with the major decline of Liverpool.

The 84-year-old iconic former Manchester United manager turned the Red Devils into a powerhouse, all the while Liverpool became a shadow of their former selves.

However, United have experienced deep-seated struggles post-Ferguson at the same time as Liverpool have found recent — albeit sporadic — Premier League success.

Ferguson is convinced that United are in the same position that Liverpool once found themselves in and Ineos’ “recruitment” would be the only way to break the “cycle.”

Speaking to Press Box PR in 2025, he said: “It is not easy. I remember looking back on my own time there, starting off when Liverpool were the bee’s knees.

“They were a fantastic club, winning the European Cup four times and all that, but then it took them 31 years to win the league again.

“We are now in the same situation. It could be ten years, [it] could be 11 years, because of that cycle.

“It has to be thought out carefully and we have to make sure the recruitment is going to be better than what it was.”

Ineos’ recruitment policy this summer must strengthen rather than regress to break the cycle that Sir Alex Ferguson has witnessed

Ferguson’s sentiments around Man Utd’s current ‘cycle’ came at a time when Ruben Amorim was in the dugout after a strong 2025 summer window under Ineos.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team brought the likes of Senne Lammens, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko to United as part of a major spending spree.

However, Ruben Amorim experienced an up-and-down season after the aforementioned recruitment before the former Man Utd boss was axed in January.

Ineos are well-positioned to advance the recruitment that was put into place last summer, especially with Michael Carrick settled into the Old Trafford hot seat.

The World Cup has slowed down the immediate transfer market and United fans are still waiting for official announcements, despite the noise around midfielder Ederson.

The ball is now in Ineos’ court to show if the Man Utd cycle is finally starting to crack or if Ferguson’s powerful remarks are a bigger warning for the Red Devils.
