Ruben Amorim already seems to have a favourite in Man Utd squad after draw vs Ipswich Town on debut

The Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United didn’t end as it began, as they couldn’t take advantage of an early goal and drew vs Ipswich 1-1.

Andre Onana was the star vs Ipswich with his saves arguably saving Manchester United from leaving Portman Road Stadium with zero points.

Amorim started with a surprising first XI, with a combination of injuries plus less time on the training pitch leaving him hamstrung with his selections.

Still, one player who made the first XI seems to have already become a favourite of his in the Man Utd squad which promises hope for the future.

Amad steps up to Ruben Amorim’s challenge

Ruben Amorim had said before this game that he was likely to use fullbacks in his wingback spots instead of wingers because teaching the latter how to defend was more difficult.

Amad clearly did enough in training to convince him otherwise as the Ivorian started as the right-wingback.

Therefore, not only was he playing in an unfamiliar position, but he was playing on his “wrong foot” since he’s predominantly left-footed and the wingback role is different from that of an inside forward.

Regardless, he assisted expertly for Rashford with his “weaker” foot, showing again his versatility and two-footedness which has made him a nightmare to deal with.

After some early struggles to get to grips with his defensive duties, even that part of his game came along brilliantly as the match progressed.

The effort and willingness to make a difference is half the battle when defending and Amad ran around like a man possessed to best use any tools at his disposal to defend well.

Amad has unlocked multiple roles in Ruben Amorim’s tactic

When Amorim arrived, it was widely assumed that one of the two spots behind the striker would go to Amad as it perfectly suited his game which excels in close spaces.

Contrary to all expectations, he not only started as the wingback, but did so on his wrong side and impressed the most among all outfield players.

With the battle of the front three spots involving as many as seven players, more if prospects from a free-scoring academy are included, Amad has just unlocked undroppable status under Amorim too.

With his two-footedness, he can play on either wing as a wingback or play in the spots behind the striker if United want someone who can unpick the lock further forward.

Amad became undroppable under Ruud van Nistelrooy in just four games and he could have dropped his head since everything changed after that- the manager, system, and the role.

Instead, he did what he has been doing since coming to Old Trafford– make the best of the situation and come out the other side a better player.
