Michael Carrick’s demeanour and handling of emotions should not be overlooked by Ineos if Manchester United consider Andoni Iraola as a rival managerial candidate for him.
The news that Andoni Iraola is expected to leave Bournemouth has blown the door wide open again for the debate over the vacant head coach role at Manchester United.
Bournemouth’s hopes of getting Iraola to commit his future to the Premier League club have been dashed ahead of the Spaniard’s contract expiring in the summer.
Iraola has been linked with Man Utd in recent months, but the 43-year-old Spanish manager’s demeanour is a disadvantage to what Michael Carrick brings to the table.

If not Michael Carrick… WHO ELSE?
Can you name a good available alternative to Michael Carrick you actually want?
Rafael da Silva has perfectly encapsulated Michael Carrick’s finely balanced emotions for his Man Utd success as a manager
Outside of the highs of Michael Carrick’s interim head coach reign so far, the 44-year-old Manchester United legend’s demeanour has spoken volumes.
Even during Man Utd’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds United at Old Trafford on Monday evening, Carrick never looked visibly furious with his overall temperament.
The former Middlesbrough manager’s body language — and overall aesthetic presentation — has made him a desirable candidate for the permanent gig.
Carrick’s balance of calmness and anger feels like a complete contrast to the drama that Ruben Amorim could cause during his 14-month reign at the Red Devils.
Rafael da Silva knew the former Man Utd and England midfielder all too well as a teammate and broke down why ‘calmness’ and ‘anger’ are different with Carrick.
“To be honest, he has always been calm, but when you get angry, sometimes you [can’t] see it,” he said on the Inside Carrington podcast.
“You know, the people who sometimes don’t talk loudly, but you can see his face [and] he’s angry.
“So, I think if you’re a clever player, you’re going to see when he’s angry or not, you know, but he’s not like the loudest guy, you know, like to shout and everything.
“Well, he has never been like this as a player. I don’t know how [he is] as a coach because you don’t see a lot [of] him doing this on the pitch, but that’s not one thing he can do in the dressing room or maybe in the training, you never know.”
Where does Andoni Iraola rank for you among Michael Carrick alternatives?
Would you want Iraola at Old Trafford, now he is ready for a new challenge?
Michael Carrick’s approach to emotions feels far more fitting than what Andoni Iraola would offer as Man Utd manager
The fact that Rafael da Silva is questioning what Carrick’s emotions are like as a manager compared to his time as a player is only a positive thing now.
It shows that Carrick is keeping the same level-headed — and criminally underrated — mentality that allowed him to shine as an elite player during his prolific career.
Ineos’ desire to flirt with an approach with Andoni Iraola would come with its own risk, including the Bournemouth manager’s forthcoming mentality as a coach.
Iraola’s ‘honest approach’ to players feels far less appealing for a United manager compared with someone who can manage calmness and anger as Carrick does.
“I couldn’t do my job if I had a queue of players at my door every Monday, looking for a chat,” he told Relevo, as per the Premier League’s official website.
“Managing people is tough and it’s important to maintain a little bit of distance.
“Obviously, you should never mislead your players, but total honesty is also not always the best policy, either.
“If the truth is going to do damage unnecessarily, then it’s better to find a more subtle way to make your point.”
Iraola might be ‘keeping it real’ with his demeanour, but it feels like a step backwards from Carrick if he does beat the Man Utd legend to the permanent role.
