McTominay shines, but Man Utd teammate was absolute class, the real MOTM

Manchester United star Scott McTominay scored the two goals to secure the team’s victory against Chelsea.

There was a runaway victor in the Manchester United fan vote for man of the match against Chelsea.

Scott McTominay earned a staggering 72 per cent of the vote, with the rest so split that nobody else cracked double figures.

Alejandro Garnacho earned just six per cent. Well, put us in that ‘six per cent club’.

Alejandro Garnacho deserves praise

We don’t want to play down Scott McTominay’s contribution. He is the reason Manchester United won the match, with his goals.

But his second goal does not get scored without Alejandro Garnacho’s pinpoint cross, his first assist of the season.

The 19-year-old ran Reece James ragged in the second half, and really caused Chelsea problems with his tireless energy.

Every time he got the ball, he looked like making something happen, driving at goal, picking the passes, his decision making was spot on throughout – perhaps apart from the wild volley he attempted, but you can understand that after his successful overhead kick last month.

Garnacho was praised by John O’Shea on MUTV, who observed: “Garnacho, some of the crosses rtonight were absolute class. He is going from strength to strength [He is] showing his creative side.”

Garnacho is emerging as United’s best left wing option

There is currently no debate over Manchester United’s best option from the left. Alejandro Garnacho has won that spot fair and square from Marcus Rashford.

Garnacho ran tirelessly throughout, doing the defensive work to put Chelsea under pressure. It’s been a criticism of Rashford that he does not do this.

United’s front three worked in sync, with Rasmus Hojlund and Antony joining Garnacho to press as a trio and create problems for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Still only 19, Garnacho is just scratching the surface of his potential. Ally McCoist told commentary on Amazon Prime: “He’s committed, he’s direct, [and] he’ll get better with time.”

From the first whistle, it was Garnacho’s energy which set Chelsea on edge and placed them on the backfoot. It was a tone-setting performance from the teenager, just what the team needed.
