Manchester United are in the process of trying to get their season on track.
It doesn’t bode well in January that Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League and out of the Carabao Cup.
There have been defensive problems, especially at left wing-back, but another glaring issue is the lack of goals from United’s forward players.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are tied for having the most goals by a United player in the Premier League this season, with four goals each. Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho are stuck on three each.
This needs to improve if United are to climb back up the league table and compete for the European places.

Rasmus Hojlund’s concerning form
After missing the start of the season, Rasmus Hojlund appeared to have hit the ground running after recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained during pre-season.
The Denmark international returned from his two-month absence by scoring two goals in his first three starts. His goal against Brentford will stand out as he chipped the ball over Mark Flekken – but sadly, Hojlund has suffered a dip in form since then.
In his first season at Old Trafford, Hojlund scored 16 goals for United—10 in the Premier League—which was an impressive tally considering he was adapting to English football after joining from Atalanta.
However, Hojlund is struggling to hit the same numbers this term, failing to score a goal in the past month. That is seven games without a goal for the 21-year-old.
Hojlund’s last goal came in United’s 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the start of December. It was a night to forget for Ruben Amorim, but it’s a worrying sign that our Danish striker has been unable to find the back of the net since then.
Some fans will argue that Hojlund is not getting enough service from his team-mates, but even he will be disappointed with his goalscoring output thus far this season.
Joshua Zirkzee growing in confidence
Leading the line for United is not an easy job, but Hojlund needs to score more goals to fight off competition from Joshua Zirkzee.
Zirkzee has scored more goals (3) in the Premier League than Hojlund (2) this season, but neither player has a tally to be proud of.
| Bruno Fernandes | 4 |
| Marcus Rashford | 4 |
| Amad Diallo | 3 |
| Alejandro Garnacho | 3 |
| Joshua Zirkzee | 2 |
| Rasmus Hojlund | 2 |
| Lisandro Martinez | 1 |
| Casemiro | 1 |
| Matthijs de Ligt | 1 |
It helps Zirkzee that he is growing in confidence, but Amorim could do with having two forwards amongst the goals.
Hojlund is going through a drought in front of goal but he has an opportunity to fix that when United host relegation contenders Southampton on Thursday night.
Zirkzee and Hojlund will be eager to start against Southampton.
The Saints have conceded 44 league goals this season. It also bodes well that they have the worst away record in the top-flight, earning just two points from a possible 30.
