Manchester United should repeat Bruno Fernandes trick and make serial goalscorer top target for 2025

After three games in the Premier League season, Manchester United are already six points behind the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Granted, the expectation was never winning the title, nowhere near, but the thing that’s frustrating the most is that Manchester United have actually done far better than the results.

They have just been wasteful to an extreme degree in front of goal, a theme that has dominated every game this season.

Rasmus Hojlund’s absence hurts, while Joshua Zirkzee isn’t a natural goalscorer. How about buying a player who has 68 goal contributions in 55 games at the top level?

Viktor Gyokeres should be Man Utd’s top target

The last time Manchester United bought from Sporting Lisbon, he turned out to be quite alright!

Bruno Fernandes arrived as a saviour for a flailing team and has, at times, single-handedly carried the squad on his back to victories.

The current United team is thus a glowing reference for buying from the Portuguese league, so Viktor Gyokeres’ exploits for Sporting Lisbon can’t be taken lightly.

The Swedish goalscoring machine has scored 50 and assisted 18 in just 50 games for Sporting and to prove that he isn’t a flash in the pan, has somehow improved upon his fiery form this season.

In the first four games this year, he has already scored seven and assisted once, as Sporting have again flown to the top of the league table.

In all competitions, he has 10 goal contributions in five games, alerting elite European clubs that he is here to stay and make an impact.

Gyokeres has already been linked to Man United before, but they didn’t progress much further than tentative interest.

Teams like Arsenal and Chelsea have also been credited with interest previously, and the summer of 2025 could finally be the one where he moves, having dominated the Portugal league for two years straight.

Viktor Gyokeres to Man Utd makes perfect sense

For starters, it must be mentioned that Gyokeres’ numbers are not a result of some freak of nature finishing.

His movement in the box lends to high-quality chances and he converts them at a world-class rate, a lethal combination in a striker.

This season, his seven league goals have come from an xG of exactly seven, while Man United have missed big chances at an alarming rate.

If anything, good strikers regularly overshoot their xG so the potential for Gyokeres to add to his already freak tally is tantalising. Therefore, his arrival would directly address a big pain point for United this season- wasteful finishing.

Secondly, his age profile (he will be 27 at the start of next season) means he is a perfect complement to United’s collection of youngsters.

He will arrive at the beginning of his peak years, while Zirkzee’s playing style means he will be suited to play alongside Gyokeres.

Hojlund as an option off the bench against tired legs as he continues to add to his game and manage his minutes is a dream prospect.

Furthermore, Gyokeres has already cut his teeth in English football, bossing the notoriously physical Championship with Coventry City.

Age profile matches, playing style is perfect, role in the team is clear-cut, and the player is ready for the next step. United should be all over this deal in 2025.
