Manchester United returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Everton.
Manchester United needed a strong response after losing in the Manchester derby last week and looked much more positive against Everton.
The Toffees did help them, though, by twice fouling Alejandro Garnacho in the box to give away penalties converted by Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
Erik ten Hag’s side were comfortable in a dull second half and never had their lead seriously threatened.
Here’s how the players did.
Andre Onana – 7
Made a brave save in the opening moments to throw himself at Ben Godfrey and more good stops, especially down at his near post just after the break, too. Commanded his area well with catches and punches.
Diogo Dalot – 5
Everton’s biggest threat came from Dwight McNeil on Diogo Dalot’s side, with the winger getting a lot of joy. Not the best afternoon for the United right-back.
Raphael Varane – 7
Made a crucial block on the half-time whistle from McNeil to ensure United went in two-up and was a composed presence whenever Everton threatened to get past him.
Jonny Evans – 6
Solid performance and good distribution from the back by the 36-year-old.
Victor Lindelof – 5
Some nice touches on the ball but still struggling positionally in the unfamiliar left-back role. Dragged inside too often and a better team would have punished him.
Casemiro – 4
An awful first half in which he gave the ball away in dangerous positions twice in the first five minutes alone and misplaced several more passes. Improved slightly in the second 45 with some good defensive work.
Kobbie Mainoo – 6
An understated display from United’s midfield starlet. Didn’t stand out in either direction but remains so assured for someone so young. Was lucky Lewis Dobbin’s cross wasn’t converted after losing him in the box, though.
Bruno Fernandes – 7
This is the Bruno Fernandes we want to see. Not only did he convert the first penalty expertly but he ran the play with some brilliant distribution and real drive going forward. At the heart of all United did well.
Scott McTominay – 5
A quiet performance but made one good block from Abdoulaye Doucoure’s shot. Overhit a pass when given the chance to play Rashford through and wasted another good opportunity to do so later on.
Alejandro Garnacho – 8
A fantastic display from the Argentine who clearly loves playing against Everton. It wasn’t a stunning overhead kick this time but he won both penalties with lovely pieces of skill and was a constant threat down the right.
Could have been a bit more clinical himself, though, and squandered a couple of good chances in the second half.
Marcus Rashford – 7
Looked dangerous and rejuvenated after his goal against Manchester City and remains at home on the left. Worked hard going in the opposite direction as well.
He buried the second penalty when the pressure was on as you can imagine the criticism he would have got for taking it instead of Fernandes and not scoring.
Substitutes
Sofyan Amrabat – 5
Replaced Mainoo with 10 minutes to go and didn’t give a goal away like he did in the derby. Some decent touches.
Antony – 5
Came on with eight minutes remaining and gave the ball away soon after. Also out jumped by Vitaliy Mykolenko in the box but got into some good positions on the left.
Willy Kambwala – N/A
A late change and didn’t have a chance to do much.
