Thomas Tuchel did not select a single player from Manchester United when he named his squad for England’s next round of internationals in June.

There is no denying that it has been a disastrous season for Manchester United. This time, big questions are bound to be asked of the players involved in the latest round of shortcomings.

United are destined to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table, with one game left to play against Aston Villa on Sunday.

To make matters worse for Ruben Amorim, United lost 1-0 against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday night, ruling out the possibility of Champions League football for another year.

The five United first-team members overlooked by Tuchel this time around include Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and loanee Marcus Rashford. That means they will get the entire summer off to prepare themselves for next season.

Still, it raises questions over some players and their futures on the international stage.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw should call it a day with England

In the modern game, it’s important to know when to manage the rigours of top-tier competition. Paul Scholes noticed this early in his playing career by bringing his England career to an early halt to add longevity to United.

Circumstances will always dictate, and it looks like two United players find their international careers at a crossroads, especially after Tuchel’s latest squad announcement.

Perhaps the biggest surprise from the United omissions is experienced centre-back Maguire, who has proven to be a key player under Amorim.

Maguire missed out on Tuchel’s first selection due to injury, but he has been overlooked completely for a World Cup qualifier with Andorra and an international friendly against Senegal.

Uncapped Trevoh Chalobah has been selected for the first time, although Tuchel stressed Maguire will always be in his thoughts. Maguire must decide if he is happy to be put on the long finger at 32 years old or if he wants to focus on his playing career.

The same can be said for Shaw, who has not played for England since going to the European Championships despite carrying an injury.

United’s 29-year-old left-back needs to put his body first, and he has had far too many injuries to risk playing for England again.

Maguire and Shaw shone under Gareth Southgate

Tuchel’s squad suggests he is already making changes to the England setup that existed under Gareth Southgate.

For example, Maguire and Shaw were two key players under Southgate during his time in charge of the Three Lions.

Maguire was one of Southgate’s most trusted lieutenants and he admitted it was a ‘difficult call’ to leave the United defender out of his squad for Euro 2024.

Southgate took nine defenders – including a not fully fit Shaw – but Maguire was not risked.

Speaking to reporters at the time, Southgate said (via BBC Sport): “I think we took nine [defenders] in the last couple of tournaments when I looked through, so I think we are the same [depth]. That was part of the reason that, in the end, we couldn’t take Harry Maguire because we would have had to have taken a 10th [defender] and that balance wouldn’t be right. It would have left us short in other areas of the pitch.

“Harry has made some progress but it has been complicated and we definitely wouldn’t have had him in the group stages. There were too many hurdles to get through without really being clear about where we might get to. Given that we haven’t got a clean bill of health across the rest of the backline as well, the decision became that we needed cover and players that are fit and ready to go from the start.

“It was another really difficult call. You know how I feel about Harry Maguire, what he has done for England and what he has done for me as a manager.”
