Man Utd could use veteran’s extension to replicate the Senne Lammens effect for Radek Vitek

Tom Heaton’s current contract expires in the summer, so it remains to be seen if the experienced goalkeeper will be offered a new deal at Manchester United.

After making history as the third Manchester United player to reach the 40s club during the Premier League era, Tom Heaton will be considering retirement.

Of course, Heaton could put off retirement for another year, and another contract offer from United would undoubtedly help sway his decision.

Heaton returned to Old Trafford in 2021 and has been a third-choice keeper for most of that time, despite initially coming through United’s academy during the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Tom Heaton new deal could aid Radek Vitek’s development at Man Utd

At the age of 40, Heaton has transitioned into a player-coach figure within United’s first team, which tells us how highly the experienced goalkeeper is thought of at Old Trafford.

Heaton was given a contract extension last year, and it wasn’t given to him with the idea of playing games.

According to The Sun, United are exploring a new contract with Heaton, which means everyone at the club is satisfied with his influence as an experienced leader in the dressing room.

The former Burnley stopper has only made three senior appearances for United, yet I still find myself arguing why he deserves at least one more extension to stay at the club.

With Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir likely to be sold by United in the summer, there may be room for a new back-up keeper, unless Radek Vitek wants to fight for his place with Lammens.

Vitek has returned to United following an impressive season-long loan at Bristol City. The 22-year-old may decide he wants to go back out on loan – or leave – to play first-team football unless he remains to push Lammens.

The same report from The Sun states that Vitek has been training with Heaton since returning to the club, and the club will be eager to see the academy star develop in a similar way to Lammens.

Heaton has been pivotal in stabilising Lammens’ transition to the Premier League. From learning that the goal of goalkeeping is “not giving games away”, as per The Independent, emphasising that the team must be able to rely on their stopper.

Beyond technical drills, Heaton has proven to be a fantastic professional throughout his time at the club, which is something Lammens would have taken note of this season.

Vitek could learn a lot from Heaton if he spends a year with the keeper, challenges Lammens, and fights for his United career.

Should Manchester United be extending Tom Heaton’s contract?

Casemiro explains Tom Heaton’s importance in Man Utd dressing room

Casemiro’s interview on Rio Ferdinand Presents aired this week, as he stressed Heaton’s importance in the United dressing room.

Rio Ferdinand and Casemiro were discussing Heaton’s role in the team and how the work he does doesn’t get the recognition it deserves from people on the outside.

“He pushes in training,” Casemiro said when asked about Heaton.

“The first thing is that he pushes the training. He pushes the training every time. He pushes the game, before the game.

“Of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. And he explains his experience. He explains, because he speaks English very well.

“But for me, Tom, every room needs one Tom. Every room needs this guy because he helps the room too much.”
