It has been eight years since Michael Carrick made his final appearance at Old Trafford as a player.
For those of you who don’t remember Michael Carrick from his playing days at Manchester United, he was vastly underrated by many, though his genius would guide Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to success.
Carrick was United’s number 16 and former club captain, despite being criminally underused by England, which meant many pundits overlooked his true qualities.
The midfield maestro joined the dots in the middle of the pitch for United, almost playing in a quarterback-type role. Carrick was the focal point in the middle, joining with the left-back, the centre-back, the goalkeeper, and even, then, in the final third.
Carrick was an elite performer and won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League during his time at Old Trafford. He was also included in the PFA Team of the Year in 2003/04 and 2012-13.
In 2013, Carrick was also named United Players’ Player of the Year.

Seven years since Michael Carrick retired
It will make many United fans feel old to discover it’s been seven years since Michael Carrick waved goodbye to Old Trafford as a player.
Carrick went on to become a coach at United as well as interim manager for a short period. He is currently manager of Middlesbrough in the Championship.
However, it is seven years to the day that Carrick walked out to a guard of honour and on 80 minutes strode off the turf for the last time to a standing ovation after an incredible career.
Speaking at the time, Carrick said: “I have to thank the manager [Jose Mourinho] an awful lot. It was an unbelievable opportunity for me. I look forward to learning off him, he is one of the very best. I am sure he will teach me a few things and we will have some success in the near future, I am certain of that.”
Carrick, who had already agreed to join Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff after retiring, registered an assist against Watford in his final game.
The midfielder rewound the clock as he slid a 40-yard ball onto Mata’s left boot. He passed to Marcus Rashford, who scored a 13th goal of the season.
Carrick got the farewell he deserved at Old Trafford seven years ago.
Michael Carrick would be perfect in Ruben Amorim’s team
United don’t possess a player with the same qualities as Michael Carrick.
Imagine a midfielder sitting deep with the ability to keep possession and find forward passes in the final third to allow the forward players to be creative.
| Games | Goals | Assists |
| 464 | 24 | 35 |
Ruben Amorim would find his team’s transitional play more fluid as a result and only time will tell if he can find a player capable of doing that in the current market.
Players that share Carrick’s qualities are expensive in the modern game and rare.
