Man Utd’s end-of-season deadline to make a decision on their permanent manager is inching closer, and the clouds are clearing with their latest Julian Nagelsmann stance.
Michael Carrick has done all he could to throw his name into the hat with a sterling run of form since taking over.
However, doubts about his long-term suitability continue to linger, which is why other names have been mentioned in the race.
Julian Nagelsmann is one of those names, and Man Utd’s latest stance on the German is an indicator that the stage is being set for a decision soon.

Where does Julian Nagelsmann rank in Man United’s new manager shortlist?
Would you be concerned of his similarities with Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag?

Ineos have been patient with their permanent manager decision, mindful of how the season crashed when the Glazers turned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer permanent in 2019.
There has been no such crash under Carrick, with the team responding to setbacks nicely en route to attaining Champions League football.
It has led to calls for Carrick to become permanent manager, but in terms of pure pedigree at the highest level, Nagelsmann clears him easily.
However, the World Cup factor is proving to be prohibitive when it comes to signing Nagelsmann, as he could feasibly miss 90% of the pre-season if his German side goes all the way to the finals.
That is hardly ideal for a manager who is intensely tactical and relies on a lot of time on the training pitch to get his ideas across.
The last thing United need is a slow start to the season under a new manager after a fast end to this one under Carrick.
Therefore, United are ‘reluctant’ to commit to any manager who will be a busy bee at the World Cup, which rules Nagelsmann out.
With that out of the way, it’s clear that United are setting the stage to appoint Carrick permanently.

One by one, every candidate for the Man Utd manager has fallen by the wayside at the same time as Carrick has strengthened his own case.

Luis Enrique is likely to stay in Paris, Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti signed extensions with England and Brazil, Oliver Glasner self-imploded at Palace, and others, like Andoni Iraola or Marco Silva, have questions about translating their success to a massive club.
Meanwhile, Carrick took over a broken squad mid-season, had just 17 games to achieve an objective that looked impossible when he arrived, and is on track to confirm it with four games to go.
From the players backing him to Ineos soft-launching their decision in Ireland during the training camp, all signs have been leading up to Carrick getting the job.
The hard work will begin then, but for now, he can get a deserved reward for a miraculous job done right.
