Why Brazil’s decision over Matheus Cunha gives Ruben Amorim extra flexibility for first Man Utd game without Sesko

Matheus Cunha’s limited minutes for Brazil work out as a benefit for Manchester United.

The extent of injury to Benjamin Sesko has turned out to be better than expected, but he’s nonetheless expected to miss multiple games.

Everton will be the first test for Man Utd without their first-choice striker, which means Ruben Amorim has a decision to make.

Amorim will be pleased to see Matheus Cunha used sparingly by Brazil in their final international game of the break.

Brazil’s interesting Matheus Cunha decision

When the last international break, both Casemiro and Matheus Cunha were doubtful to start against Liverpool because of their long travels.

However, not only did they start, but they shone in the marquee game, winning over the Man Utd fans with their desire and effort.

This time, however, Amorim can’t afford to take any risks as he’s already juggling Sesko’s injury with a fixture list that is set to get busier.

Who should start as striker for Man Utd with Benjamin Sesko injured?

Therefore, it was interesting to note how Brazil used Cunha in their international games.

Cunha impressed against Senegal in a game where Casemiro scored a goal, before they faced Tunisia.

Despite having no injury worries, Cunha was taken off at half-time in the 1-1 draw.

This could suggest that United have been in communication with Brazil over Cunha’s minutes needing to be managed, and the Selecao have accommodated United’s request.

It also helps that Brazil’s game took place in Lille, France, a shorter travel time for both Manchester United’s Casemiro and Cunha to return to Manchester.

Cunha availability provides extra flexibility

With Benjamin Sesko out, Ruben Amorim will be delighted that Matheus Cunha returns relatively fresh.

Having Cunha available is a boost, with the forward able to play as a number 10, or as a lead striker.

The Man Utd manager has caught a lot of flak for being wedded to his system and idea, but he has always said that roles define the system, not a formation on paper.

It goes without saying that United will play differently with Cunha as their striker instead of Sesko, because the two players’ skill sets couldn’t be more different.

Where that leaves Joshua Zirkzee is a dicey question, but for now Ruben Amorim has options he can explore in the lead-up to the game.
