Ineos’ worst decision at Man Utd looks unforgivable now after brutal ‘no connection’ revelation

Ineos have become the face of all decisions at Manchester United despite being minority owners on paper which is probably making the Glazers giddy.

However, at the end of the day, that’s the deal they signed up for and the criticism comes with the praise.

That is even truer because, unlike the Glazers, they’ve been extremely proactive, for better or worse, as barely a week goes by without a major declaration.

However, the battle for their worst decision has a clear winner that looks worse with each passing week, and the latest revelation from an ex-player makes it completely unforgivable.

Ineos, Erik ten Hag, and the extension that shouldn’t have been

The date is May 25, 2024, and Manchester United have done the impossible, beating much-fancied city rivals from the blue half 2-1 in a game for the ages.

Erik ten Hag has his vindication as the goalscorers are the two players he brought through the system – Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

The winds have suddenly changed after a historically bad Premier League season and the Man Utd manager who looked like a dead man walking coming into the game leaves it as the serial winner.

Above him, upheaval is coming in the executive structure as Ineos prepare to take control of their first summer at Man Utd.

The head coach’s fate remained in the balance but Ineos get swept away by the fan euphoria and after an uncomfortably long public search for a replacement, extended Ten Hag by a year.

What happened afterward needs no expanding upon which is why it remains a decision that has probably set United back by at least three years.

It looked questionable when it happened, wrong when Ten Hag was sacked, and unforgivable after Raphael Varane’s latest admission.

Raphael Varane’s brutal Ten Hag admission

For an ownership group that was at pains to stress how thorough a process they undertook before extending Ten Hag, Varane revealing the dressing room had no connection with Ten Hag despite the FA Cup win reflects extremely badly.

It effectively implies one of two things, neither very positive.

Either Ineos failed to read the room after speaking to players before arriving at that decision which is worrisome for their future credentials.

Or worse still, they read the room but refused to acknowledge it, thereby condemning United to a written-off season this year, only prolonging the misery.

Both these cases will make fans question the suitability of Ineos to take decisions that will mold the future of the club. Their rocky start has just been made unforgivable by Varane’s revelation.
