Ineos played a masterstroke after announcing Bryan Mbeumo transfer, it is pure genius

The Bryan Mbeumo transfer was threatening to become a farce that would stick with Ineos forever, but after letting the dust settle on the announcement, they played a final masterstroke.

The Glazer regime had plenty of examples of their mistakes, from Frenkie de Jong to Antony, and the likes of Di Maria, if taken further back.

After a serene 2024/25 summer window and January 2025, the deal for Bryan Mbeumo was the first one where questions were openly asked of Ineos.

From the delay in the deal to the eventual numbers, fans were miffed, but not only does a key detail in the agreement explain the delay, but what Ineos did after announcing Mbeumo was pure genius.

Ineos masterstroke after Bryan Mbeumo announcement

Man Utd announced Bryan Mbeumo in time for the squad’s departure to the USA for the all-important pre-season tour.

It brought an end to a saga that stretched for more than a month, with more than one instance of Brentford reportedly negotiating in bad faith.

Still, Mbeumo to United was always a matter of when, and not if, and what Ineos did after announcing the transfer proved they were as frustrated with the delay as Man Utd fans.

In a move that doesn’t happen often, United effectively briefed through various media outlets how Brentford shifted the goalposts on their asking price repeatedly.

They even asked Mbeumo to take a pay cut, while moving from Brentford to Man Utd no less, in order to let Man Utd pay a bigger transfer fee.

Those are the kinds of details that rarely come out, let alone through respected media outlets like the BBC, which reported United’s frustration over ‘dragging’ the deal out.

Ineos weren’t letting Brentford’s stance slide after doing the deal, taking back the control of the media narrative that was increasingly painting United as incompetent instead.

Long-term effects for Man Utd and Brentford

This masterstroke by Ineos in breaking ranks and letting these finer details “leak” will have long-term effects for both Brentford and Man Utd.

Brentford have always positioned themselves as a ‘selling club’, a stance which has allowed them to snap up exciting young players with the promise they will be eventually allowed to move on to bigger things.

By putting this out in public, United have hit back at Brentford defying this stance, which might make players think twice before joining them if they see it as a stepping stone.

From United’s point of view, it sends a clear message that the deal will be done on their terms, and any unwanted shenanigans will be called out.

It’s a far cry from the days of Ajax challenging Man Utd to go as high as possible, and United ending up paying £85m for Antony, or spending the whole window negotiating for Frenkie de Jong, only to realise that the player doesn’t want to join.

A wait of 44 days is worth it if it means fixing this reputation in the market for good.
