Manchester United are on the hunt for a sporting director this summer and Marco Neppe should be a prime target after leaving Bayern Munich.

Big changes are coming to Old Trafford with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos now calling the shots ahead of a big summer window.

United were quiet in January but fans are expecting plenty of business in the summer as Ineos stamp their authority on the club.

We have already seen that with the big move to bring in Manchester City’s Omar Berrada as Chief Executive, but more will be needed.

Top recruitment staff will be a key focus with United needing to become much smarter in the transfer market, and we will surely see a sporting director arrive this summer.

Paul Mitchell seemingly won’t be arriving but whilst Julian Ward remains a target, a very interesting option has just become available…

Manchester United should look at Marco Neppe

Marco Neppe is the man in question after leaving Bayern Munich with immediate effect in January.

Neppe served as Bayern’s technical director but is moving on with the Bundesliga giants going in a different direction having landed former RB Leipzig man Max Eberl.

Neppe’s availability should put United on red alert and Ineos must be looking at him as a potential addition to this new United era.

The 37-year-old has been a key part of the Bayern setup for nearly 10 years, gaining valuable experience with one of the elite European clubs.

That history makes Neppe very appealing and Ineos have shown a willingness to go with young candidates for key jobs.

Nice sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is just 38 and boss Francesco Farioli is even younger at 34, with Ineos putting their faith in talented up-and-comers.

Neppe has already reached major heights in his career but fits a similar bill at 37 and his work at Bayern will surely put him on the Ineos wish list.

Who is Marco Neppe and who has he signed?

Neppe was a right back in his playing days, turning out for the likes of Wehen Wisebaden, VfL Osnabruck and Alemannia Aachen in Germany’s lower leagues.

After deciding to retire at just 28, Neppe headed to Bayern and has been key to their recruitment approach ever since, taking a key role in their scouting setup before stepping up to technical director in 2021.

Neppe has become known for his role in major Bayern deals; Fabrizio Romano highlighted Neppe’s involvement in signing the likes of Harry Kane, Kim Min-jae and Matthijs de Ligt in recent times.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg also claims that Neppe was vital to landing top young talents like Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Mathys Tel.

That mix of signing immediate first-team stars in big deals and securing top prospects for the future is exactly what United have been seeking.

Kane and Kim were both linked with United but ended up at Bayern; Neppe was seemingly crucial to them ending up in Bavaria rather than at Old Trafford.

Neppe has proven himself in terms of talent identification and helping pushing the big moves over the line and with United needing to improve in both areas, the German seems like an ideal candidate for Ineos.
