Ineos’ hope to benefit from bumper World Cup ‘premium price tag’ for Man Utd player sale did not come to fruition

Ineos will now have to explore all available options to offload one World Cup-starring Manchester United star in the summer transfer market.

The World Cup is drawing closer to its conclusion after Euro 2024 champions Spain and defending tournament title holders Argentina will meet in the final on Sunday.

Spain knocked tournament favourites France out in a 2-0 semi-final win, while Argentina secured a sensational 2-1 World Cup comeback victory over England.

Marcus Rashford is now heading back from the World Cup after England’s third-place match with France on Saturday and Ineos must now address his immediate future.

England star Marcus Rashford will not carry the World Cup ‘transfer tax’ that would have been a benefit for Man Utd

There had been hope that the World Cup could be the springboard for Marcus Rashford to increase his transfer value this summer after his return from Barcelona.

Rashford, who had been at the Camp Nou on a season-long loan, played in five of England’s seven matches at the World Cup ahead of the encounter with France.

The 28-year-old netted once in the Group L opener against Croatia, but Rashford struggled to hold down the left wing role for England ahead of Anthony Gordon.

Thomas Tuchel had relied on Anthony Gordon in the Three Lions starting XI and Rashford had to prove his point from the bench in the knockout stages.

Rashford, who only played a minute against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final defeat, was unable to bolster his transfer value with his display at the tournament.

The former Barcelona forward’s permanent move to the Camp Nou did not come to fruition this summer and Rashford has since been sent back to Old Trafford.

Ineos might have to consider another loan option for Marcus Rashford if his release clause is triggered

Rashford does have a secret £40m release clause in his contract after his Barcelona contract ended, but it remains to be seen if a club is willing to trigger it now.

Aston Villa did not sign the England international at the end of the 2024-25 campaign and Rashford’s options remain up in the air in his post-Barcelona spell.

It is believed that Rashford, who is under contract with Man Utd until 2028, would prefer a move abroad instead of fighting for his place back at Old Trafford.

However, a major stumbling block for offloading the Three Lions forward is his mammoth United wages, coupled with a transfer fee for a permanent move.

Ineos’ hope for a potential World Cup ‘bounce’ for Rashford did not manifest and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s regime may have to consider loaning him out again this summer.
