Manchester United players from the past have often swapped stories around the daunting prospect of crossing paths with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson showed both sides of his character to Manchester United players, whether acting as a ‘father figure’ or putting them on full blast in front of others.
There were many hopefuls who tried their best to climb out of the United youth academy system and to break into the first-team squad under the iconic Scotsman.
Max Lonsdale was not officially part of the United academy set-up during Ferguson’s reign, but it did not stop him from trying his hand at getting a chance at the club.

From Macclesfield Town to Sir Alex Ferguson? Max Lonsdale did what would be the ‘unthinkable’ for some former Man Utd players
Imagine thinking that it would be a smart idea to head to the home of one of the best managers of all time in a bid to secure a trial at Manchester United?
Well, that is exactly what Max Lonsdale did after he was released from Macclesfield Town — and what is even more brave is for someone to do it at only 18 years old.
According to Lonsdale, he lived in Alderley Edge in Cheshire at the time and Sir Alex Ferguson was based in Wilmslow while he was the Manchester United manager.
He admitted that he was not the “most bold person” in the world, but he chased his “dream” and decided to take a DVD to hand to Ferguson as an ‘audition tape.’
Lonsdale was not expecting the X-rated response that he received from the legendary former Man Utd boss on the phone, but he caught his attention nonetheless.
“Obviously, I was a bit taken aback by that [Ferguson asking how he had his number], but after I explained it, he was alright after that and said, ‘Yeah, come round,’” he told SPORTbible in 2024.
“I drove around to his and had a good chat – he spoke to me about my football past, my injuries and said he’d watch it [the DVD] and get back to me.
“Three days later, I got a call off [of] one of the United first-team coaches to say they liked what they’d seen and [asked] would I be willing to go down for a trial.”

Max Lonsdale didn’t make it as a Man Utd player in the end, but Sir Alex Ferguson offered the Macclesfield Town reject a chance
Max Lonsdale found himself crossing paths with the likes of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard after his bold audition to Ferguson saw him secure a two-week trial.
Unfortunately, chasing the dream of playing for Man Utd was too big and Lonsdale was unable to make it to the big stage in the Red Devils first-team squad.
Lonsdale admitted that it was “very intimidating” to speak with Ferguson, but he added that the Scot probably “liked the boldness” of his approach in the first place.
To his credit, the Macclesfield Town reject perfectly summed up what differentiated Ferguson from other managers, mainly for the former Aberdeen boss’ commitment to youthful talent.
Ferguson always practised what he preached as Man Utd boss and the living embodiment was his approach to youth players at the Red Devils.
“[Ferguson] was one of the last people I saw on my final day at Carrington,” Lonsdale told BBC Sport in 2011.
“He said I’d always be welcome to go back and train with them and that the door would never be closed.”
As a lifelong United fan who watched the highs and lows of Ferguson’s reign, there is incredible admiration for any 18-year-old who did what Lonsdale tried to do.
