Jadon Sancho has officially left Manchester United after the expiration of his contract. It brings an end to a turbulent five-year spell for the winger at Old Trafford.
Over the past five years, Manchester United sent Jadon Sancho on loan three times, arriving in a mega-money deal from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.
After spending the past season on loan at Aston Villa and being released by United, Sancho becomes a free agent.
Here are three reasons why Sancho will go down as the biggest transfer flop in United’s history.

Where did it all go wrong for Jadon Sancho? Is he the biggest Man Utd flop of ALL TIME?
It's finally official – Jadon Sancho is gone
Zero return on investment
The ultimate metric of a failed transfer is asset depreciation. Unlike other players, major disappointments like Antony or Angel Di Maria, who were sold to recoup a portion of their fees, United won’t make a penny back from Sancho.
United splashed out £73m to sign Sancho in 2021, along with a contract reportedly worth £250,000 per week.
The financial outlay behind Sancho’s transfer to United is mind-boggling.
Shocking production
In total, Sancho made 83 appearances for United, scoring just 12 goals and registering six assists.
Those figures are shockingly bad for a player who cost £73m.
Sancho never lived up to his expectations at United, and he never appeared to have the drive required to get his career back on track – even during his loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
These shocking levels of production only strengthen the argument that Sancho is United’s biggest transfer flop.

Public spat with Erik ten Hag
A flop isn’t just measured by poor form; it’s also measured by how a player conducts themselves and the level of professionalism applied when representing the club.
The lowest point of Sancho’s United career was when he aimed Erik ten Hag, accusing the former United manager of lying about his performances in training with a pathetic post on social media.
After refusing to apologise to Ten Hag, Sancho was banished from the first team entirely.
It was a poor way for Sancho to behave given how Ten Hag had backed him in the past, even giving the winger some time off (mid-season) when he was struggling with off-field matters.
