Harry Maguire’s five-word verdict summed up Man Utd win over Lyon, but Ruben Amorim will want change

Harry Maguire has made himself the hero for Manchester United after a dramatic winner against Lyon on Thursday night.

Manchester United are through to the Europa League semi-finals after a dramatic victory over Lyon on Thursday night.

United fans had surely given up hope at 4-2 down on the night as Lyon roared back at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim needed a miracle in the final minutes and got one as Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo dragged United level.

Supporters had barely stopped supporting Mainoo’s equaliser before Harry Maguire won it, heading home Casemiro’s cross to spark utter bedlam as United beat Lyon 5-4 on the night.

United can look ahead to facing Athletic Club in the semi-finals with the La Liga side fighting for a home final in Bilbao.

Harry Maguire’s five-word reaction after Manchester United win

United fans will still be on a high as they take their seats for Sunday’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

This has been a difficult season for United, and Thursday night provided a real high in a disappointing campaign.

Harry Maguire summed it up best as he spoke to TNT Sports following the final whistle at Old Trafford.

Interviewer Danny Jamieson admitted that Maguire offered him a five-word verdict on United’s win – ‘we don’t do things easily’.

That just sums United up at the moment, with wild ups and downs coming not just by the week, but often by the half in certain games.

United were dominant at 2-0 against Lyon and had chances to kill the game off, only to allow Lyon to score four times – two of them coming with 10 men.

United went from a real high and relative comfort in the game, to a complete capitulation and apparent elimination.

Falling into that situation was just ridiculous from this United squad, but they somehow found enough to hit back and claim the win.

Maguire can laugh about United’s wild inconsistencies having come out on the winning side, but it’s something United can’t really afford to continue moving forward.

Ruben Amorim will hope for less drama

Truly great teams don’t make a habit of going from one extreme to another.

United fans loved the euphoria of Thursday’s victory, but improvement must come in the long term.

Ruben Amorim ultimately knows that United need to find consistency, not just in terms of game-by-game, but also within games themselves.

United won’t get back to the top by playing well for a half and then allowing opponents to get back into the contest in the second half.

Look at Amorim’s title wins with Sporting and you will just three defeats across two title-winning campaigns.

Amorim knows what consistency looks like and his goal is to cut out some of the drama and make United a real force both in Europe and in the Premier League.

Thursday’s win will live long in the memory and anybody playing down United’s victory just doesn’t understand the delight of a late comeback.

Amorim will hope for a few less of them moving forward, though, with complete chaos rarely the recipe for success.
