In 2022 Erik ten Hag was appointed at Manchester United and a new era began. It’s been different, with the Dutchman putting his own stamp on the club – but it has not all been right.
The recruitment has been haphazard, with Erik ten Hag twice returning to Ajax for former players. One, Lisandro Martinez, has been a success, despite missing most of 2023 with injury.
The second, Antony, has not worked out. And this is one Manchester United desperately needed to work, making him the club’s second most expensive ever signing.
It is a deal Manchester United cannot afford to get wrong again.

Brian Brobbey links are making Manchester United fans nervous
It is with this context that Manchester United’s links to Ajax striker Brian Brobbey are making supporters worried.
Brobbey, 21, is a promising prospect handed his debut at Ajax by Erik ten Hag along with 22 other academy players.
This season he has struck 15 goals for the Dutch side. When The Mirror reported United’s interest earlier this month, it was not a surprise at all, with Ten Hag already showing a willingness to raid his former club.
Ajax manager warns Manchester United, and it’s time to walk away
According to Ajax manager John t’Schip, they do not intend to part ways with Brian Brobbey right now.
He told The Mail: “We try to keep the group as strong as possible. Then Brobbey is a very important player in that.
“I don’t decide whether he leaves, but insane amounts of money will be needed.”
It is these four words in particular, ‘insane amounts of money’, which should make Manchester United walk away.
Ajax have to qualify their intention to keep players with those words, because they have seen in the past that one club was crazy enough to pay them an amount to sell a player they wanted to keep… when Manchester United splashed out on Antony.
Brian Brobbey has a valuation, and Ajax would be looking for double, possibly triple that, in order to sell right now.
Manchester United have made this mistake before. Even with Brobbey’s potential and Manchester United’s need for a striker, nobody wants to see another expensive error, and it would not be fair on the player either.
