Manchester United must strengthen their left flank in 2025 and several wing-back options come to mind.
Ruben Amorim walked into a team without a recognised left-back for the start of the season due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
Unfortunately for Amorim, Shaw has since picked up another setback and is currently unavailable for selection. The England international was one of the best left-backs in the Premier League once upon a time, but he’s now unreliable due to injuries.
Ineos have prioritised signing younger players since becoming minority owners at Manchester United, but Amorim need to ensure the board brings in a top-level player to fill the wing-back role.
Diogo Dalot has played as a wing-back on his least favoured side due to absentees. The Portuguese star has been subject to criticism, but he made light work of Trent Alexander Arnold’s in United’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
Without further ado, United In Focus takes a look at five left wing-back options for the Reds to consider in 2025.

Milos Kerkez
Milos Kerkez is understood to be at the top of United’s radar but striking a deal with Bournemouth could prove costly.
The 21-year-old Hungarian has shone in the Premier League over the last year and performed superbly when United lost 3-0 against Bournemouth last month.
| Games | Goals | Assists |
| 20 | 1 | 3 |
Kerkez is under contract at Bournemouth until 2028.
He likes to get forward with speed and purpose, which is something Amorim will want to add to his side over the course of the year.
Nuno Mendes
Amorim could look to add a fellow Portuguese man to his squad this year.
Nuno Mendes played under Amorim at Sporting CP before leaving for PSG in 2021, initially on loan.
United already have a strong Portuguese contingent with Bruno Fernandes and Dalot.
While the 22-year-old Portugal international is under contract at PSG until 2026, the Ligue 1 champions won’t let him go for cheap.
Mendes has won domestic titles at Sporting CP as well as PSG, despite being a young player with plenty of time to develop his game further.
Rayan Ait-Nouri
Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri has established himself in the Premier League and could make an ideal signing for United.
Since joining Wolves in 2021, Ait-Nouri has settled into his role and it could be argued he’s one of the most underrated wing-backs in the top-flight.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 11 | 20 | 8 | 3 | 9 | 38 | 35 | 3 | 27 | |
| 12 | 20 | 7 | 3 | 10 | 42 | 30 | 12 | 24 | |
| 13 | 20 | 6 | 5 | 9 | 23 | 28 | -5 | 23 | |
| 14 | 20 | 6 | 5 | 9 | 24 | 39 | -15 | 23 | |
| 15 | 20 | 4 | 9 | 7 | 21 | 28 | -7 | 21 |
Ait-Nouri is renowned for his dribbling and defensive attributes.
Alphonso Davies
Perhaps the most unlikely deal on the list.
Unless Alphonso Davies agrees new terms with Bayern Munich, the Canada international will be available for free in the summer.
United would be tasked with fighting off interest from Real Madrid like they did to sign Leny Yoro.
Davies has won everything during his time at Bayern Munich, including the Champions League.
Miguel Gutierrez
Girona star Miguel Gutierrez has gone from strength to strength since leaving Real Madrid.
That is why he is another exciting prospect on this list.
Gutierrez left Madrid for regular first-team football which he achieved by becoming a star player and force to be reckoned with.
In 24 appearances this term, Gutierrez has scored 2 goals and registered 5 assists.
Gutierrez is under contract until 2027.
