First-half moment shows team unity may well be returning for Manchester United

A small moment in the first half of Manchester United’s 4-3 victory over Wolves at Molineux may well hint at a return to team unity.

It was a dominant first half from Manchester United with Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund scoring in the first 45 minutes before a truly bizarre second 45 minutes followed.

Scott McTominay struck to restore the two-goal lead before a late, great Kobbie Mainoo goal won the game for United after the hosts had pulled themselves back to 3-3.

It was a special goal from the teenager which highlighted the never-say-die attitude from the team but there was an early moment that hinted at a return to the team unity which was vital last campaign.

First half moment

During the second half of the first half, United were beginning to be pegged back as Gary O’Neil’s Wolves knew they had to put on the pressure to try and turn the tide of the game.

However, one moment in particular brought back something that was very often seen from the United defence last season.

When Raphael Varane cleared a ball at the back post in the 37th minute, which was in a dangerous situation, the ball was pumped out of play and all four of the United defenders roared and high-fived and hugged.

This was seen last season early on with a 1-0 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium as Diogo Dalot made a brilliant sliding tackle to deny an attack and he got up and roared and celebrated with his teammates.

It’s this togetherness that propelled the Red Devils through the tough times and helped United win their first trophy since 2017 last season.

Win over Wolves could be key

It wasn’t only the celebrations among the defenders that could well show this team are back to being a unit again but the players’ raucous celebration after Mainoo’s goal could go a long way.

This season has been one of frustration and after Pedro Neto made it 3-3, things were looking bleak. This late goal from Mainoo could save the club from a disaster.

As well as this, having a settled defence is vital and with the return of Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez, alongside Varane and Dalot, United finally have a settled backline they can rely on.
