Darren Fletcher is back in his Man Utd U18 head coach role, and his latest comments show exactly why he’s the perfect fit to mentor the next generation.

Despite not having the best time as a caretaker for the first team, Darren Fletcher’s credentials always made him a favourite to flourish with the academy side.

The U18s are flying in the league under his guidance, sitting second in the league and unbeaten in 2026, a run they recently extended with a 3-1 win against Wolves.

Fletcher’s comments after that game prove that he’s determined to ensure Michael Carrick, or the next permanent manager, gets the perfect players for the senior team.

Darren Fletcher after Man Utd U18s’ win against Wolves

The usual suspects grabbed the headlines again as JJ Gabriel’s brace helped United emerge as 3-1 victors against Wolves.

Daniel Armer impressed at centre-back, as Bassirou Nkoto made his long-awaited return from injury.

However, the game was closer than it looks by the scoreline, as Wolves made their comeback by scoring to make it 2-1, before a stoppage-time penalty from Gabriel sealed the deal.

Fletcher gave flowers to the youngsters, but picked out a spell in the second half when they ‘overindulged’ themselves due to looking too comfortable.

He said [via MUTV]: “We went in at half-time 2-0 up and I was really happy with that. I wasn’t happy with the second half as much.

“2-0 is a dangerous scoreline, and we overindulged ourselves a little bit, a bit too many mistakes by being sloppy. We let Wolves back in the game.

“It’s all about development, but when you’ve been in the game a long time, you see these situations coming. You try and warn against it, but they [youngsters] have to experience it to learn.

“You’ve got to keep doing the right things. At 2-1, anything could have happened. We gave them a glimmer of hope.”

Fletcher is setting the standards from the beginning

If one read Fletcher’s comments in isolation, not knowing the scoreline, they would think that United lost the game.

Which Manchester United academy defender are you most excited by right now?

Several look like top talents…

However, Fletcher knows that he can be a bit harsher when they’ve won, because there is a need to keep the kids grounded while letting them enjoy the win.

By stressing the importance of “perfection” all the time, he’ll get “good” 70% of the time, so if he relaxes and praises “great”, then he will rarely get even “passable” most times.

That mentality being hammered into the players will inevitably help the senior team manager when these youngsters break through.

They will do so with a steely determination not to settle for anything below the best, and that’s how a virtuous dressing room cycle begins.

Fletcher is ensuring that the youngsters will break through mentally prepared. Everything else can be taught by time and experience.
