Cole Palmer’s first England action vs Uruguay shows why he can never replace Bruno Fernandes

Cole Palmer to Manchester United rumours have been reignited but one moment in an England shirt showed why it’s not a risk worth taking for Ineos.

There were reports in January of Manchester United’s interest in Cole Palmer because the England star is unsettled at Chelsea.

Again this week, it was reiterated that Palmer misses Manchester. Considering that Palmer is a boyhood United fan, links to Old Trafford have naturally followed.

Many view Palmer as a natural Bruno Fernandes replacement as United’s Portuguese captain is not getting any younger, but there are some huge contrasts not only in their style of play, but also in their mentality.

Cole Palmer is too afraid of risks to replace Bruno Fernandes

On Friday evening, the United trio of Mainoo, Maguire and Rashford featured for England in their 1-1 draw against Uruguay.

Cole Palmer also came off the bench in the draw, but his first action for the Three Lions was a prime example of why he is not a suitable replacement for Fernandes.

Palmer picked up possession in space and had three runners ahead of him, including Rashford running in behind and threatening to go through on goal.

Instead of taking a risk and trusting his passing ability, Palmer ended up stalling the attack by passing backwards.

In the same position, United fans are used to seeing Fernandes play the most dangerous pass. Even if it doesn’t come off, his consistency to look forward is what has made him dominate chance creation statistics across Europe.

Palmer only has one Premier League assist this season, and his England display shows why that is the case.

Cole Palmer is not worth a £100m risk for Man Utd

Most United fans will agree that Fernandes is irreplaceable. Palmer cannot live up to that comparison, but nor can any midfielder in Europe.

Replacing Fernandes is an impossible task for Ineos, and it may well require multiple signings to fill the void.

Palmer is expected to cost over £100m, and at that price tag he will be expected to fill Fernandes’ shoes on his own which is simply an impossible task.

Instead, Matheus Cunha wants to play as a No.10, and he has already proven he has what it takes to succeed at Old Trafford.

Ineos would be better off spending the money on a world-class midfield to play behind Cunha when Fernandes eventually leaves Old Trafford.
