Manchester United’s aim to get Champions League football is looking more realistic with every game, which means the futures of Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes could be intertwined.
Michael Carrick arrived at Manchester United with a simple brief, which was to guide a team out of every competition to Champions League qualification for next season.
There’s still a lot to play for, but United have emerged from outside candidates to favourites for qualification in quick time, with Bruno Fernandes at the heart of the action.
How worried should United be about Bruno Fernandes’ release clause?
The latest update from Old Trafford makes it so that the Champions League condition ensures the future of Carrick and Fernandes might end up dependent on each other.

Bruno Fernandes and Michael Carrick’s Man Utd future
For Carrick, the situation was set to be straightforward – come in, calm the chaos, get UCL football, and leave with your reputation enhanced.
For Fernandes, the situation wasn’t quite as simple after he accused United owners of “lacking courage” due to dithering over sanctioning his sale last summer.
The noise was set to grow again this summer, especially as he has a release clause for European clubs, a £57m fee that he is making a mockery of with his performances this season.
Had United seen a repeat of even the 2023/24 season, let alone the 2024/25 season, Fernandes would have been tempted to leave the club in search of silverware.
However, as it stands, GIVEMESPORT reports that Fernandes is “certain to stay” at Old Trafford next season if United clinch UCL qualification.
Fernandes has always maintained that winning trophies with United is by far his most desired career outcome, and that might just depend on Carrick now because he’ll become the prime managerial candidate if he guides this team to UCL.
Fernandes will back Carrick for Man Utd
The same article reports that Fernandes is as happy as he has ever been under Carrick’s management, which aligns with his public stance as well.
Prove me wrong: Michael Carrick has already shown enough to become permanent Man United manager.
13 points from 15 would be title winning form over a full season…
Fernandes backed Carrick to become a great manager when he took over as interim back in the 2021/22 season, and he will be feeling vindicated now.
He backed Carrick’s credentials again this season, and his own performances have been of a player who’s determined to make Ineos’ Carrick decision for them.
As it stands, it looks like Carrick and Fernandes’ fates are closely linked together.
If United clinch UCL football, Carrick’s case to stay on will be difficult to ignore, and Fernandes is certain to stay as well.
If they don’t, then Carrick might not be the only club legend who leaves Old Trafford in the summer.
