Wout Weghorst’s arrival has sparked record-breaking Manchester United run

Manchester United have scored two or more goals in their last 12 matches, a club-best record since between January and April 1959.

That is according to Opta, and United have the chance to equal the record of 13 for the first time in the Premier League era.

That would happen if we find the net twice or more at Anfield as we go in search of a first Premier League double over Liverpool since 2015/16.

Wout Weghorst has started in all 12 of those matches, and has played from the off in all 13 of the games United have played since his January loan arrival.

Weghorst sparks record Manchester United goalscoring run

Earlier on in the season, United were making chances in most games but not taking them and that led to games not being killed off.

Despite only scoring one goal in those games himself, Weghorst has acted as a foil to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

Compared to Anthony Martial, his major quality is availability and reliability, allowing United to get used to his movements and way of playing.

Then, he works as hard as anyone, pressing defenders and working back when he needs to, adding intensity to the frontline.

The contrast with Cristiano Ronaldo is chalk and cheese. Nobody would argue Weghorst is the more talented player but he makes the team play better.

Weghorst is getting criticism in some quarters for his lack of goals but those who actually watch United games know what he is offering.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Anfield on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp appeared to forget Weghorst’s name, calling him ‘the Dutch fella’.

He may be underestimated and underrated but he is a key part of why United are scoring at least two goals a game ahead of the Liverpool clash.
