Wout Weghorst says he is living a dream at Manchester United

Manchester United loan striker Wout Weghorst has been speaking to the Dutch media about his time at the club so far.

In a video interview with Vandaag Inside reported by Voetbal Primeur, he said he is loving life so far at Old Trafford.

Wout Weghorst said: “Am I living a dream? Certainly. In my eyes this is the absolute top and one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

“I have the feeling that I am very much in my place. I am super happy, very happy. I play at a beautiful level and can be of value as a regular player… That makes me a happy man.”

Weghorst playing a useful role

Weghorst has started 18 consecutive games for ManchesterUnited since joining on loan from Burnley in mid-January.

This was not something United had envisioned when he joined, even if there were concerns over Anthony Martial‘s fitness.

Weghorst, 30, has lifted the first trophy of his career during his spell at the club so far, providing an assist in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

The trouble for Weghorst has been a lack of goals, he has scored only twice for United since joining.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Weghorst discussed the early conversations he had with Erik ten Hag before he signed.

He said: “The preconceived image was that a striker was needed, one that fits the philosophy of the trainer. 

“Anthony Martial did very well, but he was injured and they want to double up all positions. But at first I didn’t come as the starting player who has played everything so far. 

“The coach did say clearly that I could force a starting place. That the best would play and it was up to me.”

Weghorst has held his position due to default, with Martial injured, however, the Frenchman is on the verge of a return after rejoining training before the international break.

When Martial returns, there will be a bit of healthy competition, and this will help Weghorst, who will get a much-needed break.

Even if he won’t admit it, fatigue may be setting in, and he could prove effective as an impact substitute, rather than a default starter.

United have a busy schedule with nine games in three competitions in April, and being able to head into it with two strikers rather than one, will be something of a unique situation for Ten Hag in 2023.
